Another BUMP!
BUM ... err, no, I actually had something to say. I haven't been updating the thread as I should.

First things first, the moment Ian entered the giveaway I knew we had a winner. I realize may not be fair for the rest of you, but I honestly can't think of someone more deserving of winning a (non-random) giveaway and found it absurd to have him waiting for a week until I officially choose the winners on January 1st; so I already sent him the game. This still leaves 4 more copies to be given away when the time is up.

Then, there's the second question. I edited it according to Eli's suggestion, as I'm sure his writing skills are better than mine (at least in English, although he probably would also best me in either of my mother tongues if he cold speak them). Specially so when I rage write on a forum.

As for your answers, they are all funny. Although I can rebate some of them; I for one managed to finish DX no only not using guns, but without any weapons at all. I knocked out the one guy on the silo by throwing him boxes while on steroids (arm strength aug).

Finally, there are other answers to that question which would grant you an instant win. For instance:

I loved the game, so I traveled to Hong Kong to visit game locations such as Tonnochi road and the Wan Chai market. I wasn't expecting the real world Hong Kong to be exactly the same as it is depicted in the game, although I must admit it would have been really cool to have a beer on the pub where some random guy confuses JC with Paul. However, I wasn't expecting it to be so absurdly different, either. Having the quote "not advisable for a tourist to visit the canals at night", I was extremely disappointed when I found out that there were actually no canals in Hong Kong. And I did ask the locals, just in case.

I was still disappointed (not sure if on the game or on Hong Kong itself) when I came across GOG and saw it for sale here. I wanted it on my shelf, but I didn't want to spend my money on it again. Thus, I'm entering the giveaway.

Yeah, if this is a reply to my reason #6, I totally agree that JC is only as violent as you are, and there's certainly no need to use any guns or, for the most part, even perpetrate any violence of any kind in the game (does throwing heavy boxes at people count?). However, the game remains very, very violent. There's going to be people shooting at you on multiple occasions. It's going to happen. And if you want to talk about how impossible it is for JC to go through the whole game peacefully, there's that whole Lebedev situation, for starters. Not to mention Paul, right? The only way you can prevent your brother from getting his ass blown to smithereens as soon as you jump out his window is by killing an entire hit squad.

Look, I've done every conceivable runthrough of the game - no weapons, no killing (and then... KILL EVERYONE!!! D-:<), total stealth, no hacking, no saving - and no matter what you do, there's violence all around JC. He's got a pretty stressful life, that guy.

I agree, violence is there and there is no way about it. I could argue that hiding your head in a hole and pretending it is gone doesn't help, but that is another matter and people look for different things when entertaining themselves. Still, you'll have to agree that people shooting at you is very different from you shooting at people (there's a saying around my place that states "I'm willing to die for my country, but not to kill for it", and I think it hits the spot). It is certainly a lot more stressfull.

It is a pity the game is limited like it is, for which I blame technology in no small part. While I absolutely loved some of the situations you mention, I would have liked different approaches to them, and some triggers are just broken. But Unreal engine had it's limitations, I suppose. This is the main reason I didn't like the sequel, I expected so many improvements and we got invisible war.

I've rewrote this post several times with stuff that I then realized were spoilers, and I'm tired and giving up there. A giveaway thread is no place for futher discussion, me thinks. Still, I think I'll open a thread on the Deus Ex forum to warn new players about the broken triggers and similar glitches. They may be spoilers, but I would have liked to know them beforehand instead of figuring them out through trial and error.
Yep, totally agree. Good saying, too! I've heard that one before, and I like it.

livefree: ... and a question would you say the 2nd deus ex games is not worth playing at all? Will I lose out in story or gaming experience if I just play the first and 3rd game?

Thanks for the 2nd chance!
I was checking the thread to start evaluating contestants, and I came up with yours. Sorry, I hadn't noticed your question until now.

To answer you, I can't give an objective evaluation of DX2. I, like many other DX fans, got it on release expecting a "powered up" version of DX. Instead, we got a game that dumbed down a lot of features and set a horrible interface and other limitations because consoles at the time were quite limiting. This pretty much enraged the DX community and we shun the sequel.

Now if you play on it's own, instead as a DX sequel... I just can't get into that mindset, it does say "Deus Ex" on the title. But I want to like the game, I really do, and I've tried to play it several times over the years (that's why I own it on GOG). However, I always get bored of it and quit. I only finished it once during my original run, and I didn't even bother to try more than 1 ending.

As for if you miss out playing only 1 and 3... not really. The 3rd is a prequel, and all the small winks on the third are about the first. Or maybe I just didn't catch invisible war references, now that I think of it. Either case, you're safe.

P1na:
Kudos on your decision to choose Ian as a winner (congrats, mate!), and thanks again, P1na!

P1na: ...not really.
I can fully corroborate this answer. Not really, indeed. Listen to Pina, LiveFree - the man speaks the truth in his post.

The 2nd would be pretty good if it were a stand-alone game unconnected to the Deus Ex universe. And yet, you don't really need to play it as part of that universe, since no one I know considers it entirely canonical, anyway. You're certainly not missing anything by avoiding it.
Congrats to Ian, and thanks again P1na! :)
I was playing some games waiting for it to be time for new year's lunch, when I remembered I was supposed to choose the winners of my giveaway. I was seriously close to forgetting, so accept my apologies.

Anyway, these are the winners: livefree, Necdilzor, khnk222. The last place was a close call, but I decided that after 6 new players, I should give one to give one to a die hard fan like Sachys. Just one question, since you are the first person I've met who has played DX on a console: how does it compare to the PC version? I'm curious.

I'll start sending the codes now.
A LOT of thanks for the game P1NA!!! :D I shall find out finally what I was missing! Thanks again, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :D

Heheh! Cheers!

Well, on first impressions it didnt appear much different, but by the time you're nearing the statue of liberty itself you realise that the console version had been edited to be a bit more "closed". There's still the majority of freedom that deus ex gives you, but the maps have been edited so your ability to go from point a to point b via point g is suddenly blocked off by a big wall or an enemy who spots you sneaking at a greater distance. I wouldn't say its dumbed down, so much as streamlined for console players. At the time the experience was a little alien in some respects - the exensive inventory and menus for one (the nearest thing I'd witnessed at the time was probably FFIX - yeah, i know!).
I seemt o remember the ps2 version actually had a little better graphical presentation - not a lot, but things felt a little smoother.
On the whole though, the transition from the console to the PC version merely opened up the world and the challenges of deus ex to me. Having played through the console version so much, I thought I'd breeze through it, but the new pathways gave new dangers.
I'm actually gonna think over this a bit more because there are a few things I'm forgetting right now!
Thank you again P1na :)
... yada yada, blah blah, thank you.
yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, I'm awesome. Autographs at the exit.

But seriously, this wasn't my giveaway, I was just running it. You should all thank Olentzero instead, he's the one who provided the 5 extra codes for the 2nd round.
