Hello

I've recently bought Dead Space on Steam and everything is fine except one thing that is pretty annoying and discourages me to play more. The problem is that every 30-60 min of game I get a freeze - I can't do anything, the game doesn't response, can't get to task manager/alt-tab/alt-f4 I could try if "sleep" or "power" buttons works but I don't have them on my keyboard, the only solution so far is to reset the whole PC. When the crash occurs, there is a sound loop heard. I thought I ended my problem by turning on V-sync in the NVIDIA settings, but the problem started to occur again.

Specs: Q6600 - not overclocked, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 9600GT at stock parameteres - 650/1625/900, Win XP SP 3

I'm looking forward to hearing any ideas what the reason of the problem is.

Vsync in Dead Space is off and the only reason why I turned Vsync on in the NVIDIA settings was because I thought it would fix crashes (however before turning it, I had crashes more frequently, like every 15 minutes).
Audio, DirectX, and video drivers updated?
Dx 9.0c, video drivers updated, I don't know about sound drivers, I'll check if there are any new versions. Would you think I would be allowed to play the game with no problems for like 60 minutes with old sound drivers? I've found some topics about Dead Space crashes saying that it's because of the video card overheating and that I should underclock it in order to play without problems, because of this I enabled V-sync in the video card settings, so that the card wouldn't create more frames than my monitor's refreshing rate. What do you think about it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe this is not the problem, because my idle temperatures for both Cpu and graphics are about 40 C and I don't have such problems with other games, for example Starcraft 2, The Witcher, Left 4 Dead 2 don't crash like this.

Edit: Do you know if there is a possibility to read graphic's card temperature in the moment of crashing?

GameRager: Turn off Vsync in game and in control panels of vid card. Vsync causes all sorts of lag and crap in DS.
DS is a funny game. I had to turn Vsync ON to get rid of lag. xD

Frustrating, but the game is a lot of fun.

I've never had DS crash on me.

You can alt-tab out to check the temps, or some programs record the temps while you play to look at afterward. If it was temps though every game would be crashing... well, every game with similar intensity.

Check to make sure the entire Dead Space folder is available to all users and not protected in any way by windows. Also defrag with optimization, if you haven't already done so. Update every driver you can think of, even sound or bios (the only crashing issues I have had in the past 5 years were solved by a bios update).

Also try turning the in-game Steam features off, as a lot of times they can mess with games.
I can't alt tab once it crashes, but I could check it after like 10 min of playing. Dead Space folder in the Steam catalogue is read-only, but so is every other and I have no problems with other games. I've recently defragmented system partition, the partition which I have Steam installed on for some reason couldn't be defragmented (propably because of the whole mess Steam does on the disk). I believe the bios version I have is the latest, I'm about to update my sound drivers now.

K. Seriously try turning Steam off in-game. It has fixed several games for me.

You mean like when I start the game, I should alt-tab and close Steam?

I'd guess he means Steam's in-game interface.

Indeed. It messes with several games, even games sold on Steam.
Played for about half an hour now, no crash. The graphics card was about 55 C max I think, CPU about 60 C so no overheating. This time I had new drivers for the sound card and I disabled the Steam interface in-game. I'll check once again tomorrow, maybe the crash is gone ;]

Edit: Still crashes, that means that in-game Steam interface shouldn't be casuing the problem.
