F1ach: Well I think L4D is multiplayer only where as Dead Island can be played solo or co-op.
L4D can be played solo with bots, who, frankly, are often better than human players other than that they tend to run in front of me when I'm shooting. It's limited by the on-the-rails level design, but if I want a quick blast of zombie-fighting I start up L4D, not Dead Island.
Anyone else playing this yet? I got 7 - 8 hours in and I'm greatly enjoying it as much as the first one. However yet another botched release on PC is kind of upsetting, the same issues people had with the first game are reoccurring, and as far as I know co-op via steam still doesn't work. I've played my whole 8 hours in co-op over tunngle.

Been playing it a bit as Purna and the new guy, liking it alot so far, but have just been dicking around, only as far as a quest to get batteries and cables.

Really enjoying it so far, just playing solo, but have had no issues so far with that aspect. Seems to look better and the cars seem to handle better. The weapons degrade seems about the same, although it's supposed to be less severe than the old game, but even with that, the amount of free molotovs and flares make it a moot point.

I'm kinda disappointed that the guns (so far) were only on the ship, I got the impression they would be plentiful in the main game, so I built Purnas skills for guns, I may import one of my other purnas into this game, see if she keeps her gear.

I'm loving it so far, I reckon if you loved the first you will love this iteration, and naturally if you hated the first, this wont excite you either.

Did anyone get the survivor pack? Wheres the special shop and the XP Booster, I got the BBQ thing.

That was my impression as well with the guns, but seems they were only given early for tutorial purposes. So far i've only found a single pistol outside the prologue, but i've been really taking my time and just exploring and doing every side quest possible. I have the survivor pack, but tbh i totally forgot about the bonus' and forgot to look out for them. I'm kinda on the fence about the usefulness of boats. They are fun and quite fast, but soooo dangerous to the point you really have to be wary using them. The engine alerts every damn zombie in ear shot, and on a long drive you'll have a massive horde chasing you all the way to your destination, and of course a boat offers almost zero protection if they happen to catch up.

Havent got as far as using a boat yet, the furthest I got from the main camp is where theres a guy wants his movie camera returned, there was a zone map there but I couldnt "use" it, I think I'm Lv 22/23 atm so not alot of worthwhile upgrades left for me at this stage, but still enjoying the game alot :)
How does the character import work then? Do you keep your level, skills and inventory or is it just level and skills? Also, if you start a new character, what level do they start off as?

My copy has been dispatched, so it should be arriving any day now. :)

All you keep is your level and skills, its absolutely pointless importing. I imported a Lv 50 Purna, she had her skills but no weapons, so now she is stuck at level 50 fighting Lv 50+ mobs with noob weapons. eg. The ship captain was lv 52. If you import, I would suggest a blade melee or a thrower, eg Xian or Logan as their skills will be useful, Purna has most points in firearms and they are redundant until well into the game.

iirc you start a new character at about lv 15.

Is the level cap any higher in this game?
ModDB is holding a contest for Dead Island Riptide for anyone out there into modding that wants to take a shot at the game. First place is a new gaming PC, second place is two GTX 660s and third place a single GTX660.

There are actual modding tools for Riptide ? That could be interesting!

Well the original had lots of mods, so it stands to reason that DI:R will too.

Thanks for the link. :)

We're also behind Zafehouse: Diaries, so if you like the helper, be sure to vote for us on Greenlight. (Or buy a copy of the game from GOG!)
So for those playing it, is this worth playing if you didn't really get into the first game but liked the premise?

I will accept the accusation of being a cynical old bastard, but this seems like a way to pay pittance for the highest quality work from the community and make millions in sales as a result.

I'd have to say no, not for full price anyway. If you couldn't get into the first game this one likely won't grab you either. Not enough has changed, it's more of the same stuff, just more refined with a few extra gameplay features.
