Fesin: Why do people even buy EA games anymore? I mean, it's not like they're particularly good...
Because many people don't care who developed or published the game, or even if they do, fail to see any kind of pattern even if they are disappointed time and again. Those people exist in abundance, they just don't care enough to visit gaming forums so you never notice them.

danteveli: With EA it used to be bad that they killed online in the sports game (on xbox they would decide to kill older ones when the new fifa, nba would show up) but making a game unplayable like that is crazy. I wonder when will Simcity go down?
Darkspore was released in April 2011.

Making it unplayable in that of short of time is why I will never support "always online."
I wonder how long till its "Simcity's" turn. They just charged $9 for 2 hotair balloon parks.

They call it the gaming industry, and it will eventually sink. Indie games ftw...
Obviously this is all those pirate's fault!

StingingVelvet: 'Hey we put a ton of time and creativity into the storyline and art of this game but in 5 years we'll let it die and become unplayable because money and no one cares ROOFLES!"

logorouge: It's crazy, isn't it? All the work wasted because "Who needs old games when you can buy new games?"
Of course, if everyone came to GOG, the work would be wasted because 'Who needs new games when you can buy old games?'

Crosmando: The only decent "EA games" are on GOG.
"Decent?" I would think there are a bunch of games like Sim City 3000, C&C series (yes the good ones-they own the franchise), and others out there I can't think of that are from EA or companies they acquired that are good. Granted anything made by Westwood which EA acquired isn't a EA game but...

P1na: I don't get the whining. Do you want a game playable in 5 years, or do you want leaderboards? Leaderboards are so shiny! Live in the present, guys
Leaderboards existing does not make a game unplayable if the servers go down, since leaderboards can be quite optional. If they were tied into the base functionality or it had no way to be played without a centraliized server that is another thing entirely.

Just no. There's no point on playing a game if I don't have my shiny leaderboards. Why would I bother playing if I don't even know how I'm doing agains every other person in the world? I need, I fucking require to know that. If I can't know that, the game shouldn't run at all, i mean there's no way anybody would need to use it under those circumstances, so why spend resources to allow it to work?

Oh right... for some reason I keep thinking the C&C games are on GOG... not sure why. I've had them installed on my computer for so long I guess
seems it's back on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/99890/?snr=1_7_15__13

and official word from EA:

Despite the earlier statement that was posted on the official Darkspore forums, Maxis PR manager Charlie Sinhaseni has confirmed via Twitter that not only is the game still very much alive, but that Maxis has managed to fix all of the game-breaking bugs that were plaguing the game before.
Just wait till they start doing stuff like hosting essential components like AI and game logic server-side. When the servers go down the game will be beyond even cracking it, lost forever
If you think about this from a business perspective then it does make sense not to support old games since they want you to buy the new ones. So financially it makes sense but naturally for us gamers this sucks if our gaming backlog would die by itself because of DRM though I guess that's one way to get rid of your backlog.

He then went on to say that EA is also offering a limited time deal on several excellent bridges.
