In other words

FBI Agent #1: Well we need to nail this guy on his uploading to 'www site here'.
FBI Agent #2: Let's just use that law to get ahold of his Internet records
FBI Agent #1: Sounds like a plan
FBI Agent #3 after looking at Internet records: Well guys, found no pornography but found a massive amount of torrents. What to do?
FBI Agent #1: Well we found this evidence as part of a crim investigation, so we can charge him with something else now.
FBI Agents in unison: Sounds like the law worked. Hahahah!

They'll go ahead and revise elements of SOPA/PIPA and try and squeeze them into this "Anti-Child Pornography" bill hoping no one will notice cus it would be political suicide for any politician to just oppose a bill like that.

wpegg: Anyway, resignation:

Quote from Orcish "Whatever passes may not be called SOPA or PIPA, but rest assured it'll pass".
Yes. That's Orcish. If you check Orcish's posts in these forums, you'll notice that he has a tendency to be grim, which still is very far from resignation.

I'm sorry, but I still think that the resignation you're seeing simply isn't there. Or rather, to be "accurate", I'm quite happy that it isn't there. :) I'm sorry however that you can't seem to see that.

Anyway, what is _your_ prediction of what will happen to the bills and their content, and what the copyright lobbyists will do next?

wpegg: So I'm calling your bluff on all this. I don't think you actually, really, believe the stuff that you're saying.
You can believe whatever you want, it's none of my concern. What I will say, though, is that myself (and likely several other people here) hold the opinions we do because we've watched American politics over the years and have seen just how dirty and corrupt it is. Maybe in the UK things are a bit better, or maybe you've simply somehow managed to maintain a bit of naive optimism, but there's not much room for optimism for those of us who have been paying attention to the way politics work here in the US. This doesn't mean I intend to give up or stop fighting these kinds of things, but I'm also not going to lie to myself about the long-term chances of success.

You only took half of my quote, and as a result completely transformed it. I said that most of you appear to have resigned to the fact that there were people doing this, and that they would win. The latter was incorrect. However the former is undoubtably true proven by this thread, and was my main point. You accept there are a load of bad guys, then just prepare for the next attack?

What will they do next? Well, There's a chap called Fred, he's in an office, he's middle management, he'll get a call saying that a new initiative needs to be launched to stop piracy. Meanwhile a board meeting will be taking place where they will report that sales are down, they will attribute some of this to piracy. Board members will be asked what is being done about this. Fred will then receive a call asking about the progress of stopping piracy. He will be told that piracy needs to be reduced by x amount within the year. He will call legal, and ask what the position is here, he will be told that they need to get legislation in place to prevent these actions. It will begin again.

I wasn't doubting that it will begin again. I was doubting your resolve.

If you really don't want it back, You need to attack, you need to get the rights you are fighting for enshrined as rights within the totally unchangeable but apparently amendable consitution. There are elements of this that people are attacking that you feel should be protected, then why not protect them?

I mostly agree with your sentiment. Just not the action. I am trying to suggest that there needs to be some fightback beyond blocking. Pro-active stuff, I don't know how well it works in America, but if a party gets some backing in the UK, the others concede, just to get the votes of that group. It's a wierd 'success' of democracy
