Blarg: I have not only never owned a console, I have never played a single game on one. Because I vowed never to buy a game with DRM again, I was thinking a lot about getting a console recently. But I realize that with my backlog of unplayed games from GOG, and because GOG will doubtless eventually come out with more great games that eat up gigantic amounts of time (HOMM2 !), it could be years and years till I ran short of games and needed to really consider getting a console.
As it is, the one I considered most strongly was the Playstation 3, because of the quality blu-ray player mostly. But the games I love most are RTS's and turn-based strategy games. RTS's supposedly aren't that good on consoles and anyway a huge online community is vital for them, and PS3 supposedly is inferior to XBox for the online community size, so ... I guess there's really very little reason for me to get a console at all, even though I've vowed never to buy a game with DRM again.
Lucky for me GOG came along. I've got cheap gaming for years to come without dropping a dime on a console.

AlphaMonkey: Blu-Ray is just one of the reasons why I went PS3 over X-Box. Backwards compatibility (i.e. being able to use PS2 games with my PS3 is another.) You're right, though, that if the main thing you'd be playing are real time strats, well, you won't find too many of those on the console platforms. (Hard to imagine navigating those kinds of games with a controller as opposed to a mouse and keyboard.)

Aliasalpha: There's never been an RTS done right on a console, they're all crap in one way or another, mostly from controls. They're either emulating the PC system in the case of the old ones like the playstation C&C or they have a custom designed for console control scheme that makes build menus easier to navigate but doesn't alter the basic inaccuracy of the analogue stick as a pointing device. The best I've seen was endwar where the voice control system was rather good though the physical control was still shit but the actual game underneath it was pretty damned boring.

Aliasalpha: the PS3's was hardware based and the recent models have dropped the emulation to reduce costs.

domgrief: Actually I'm almost the other way around - I bought a PS2 a few years ago with a couple of gun games. I switched it on, played a game, and switched it off. No patches, no wondering where my saved games were stored, no controller card IRQ conflicts.
My PS2 has since been accessorised to share the joys of SingStar, Guitar Hero, and DDR with my friends.
I wouldn't touch the controller to play a real game though :)

Almak: I really dislike the brand/medium loyalty the gaming community seem to incite in people at times. It seems like every single medium needs to have a throng of chest beating fanatics screaming that their shit is the greatest and is THE hardcore.
I really wish that there will come a time when we can start talking about games, instead of what we fucking play them on.

Aliasalpha: For my money, the game's the thing. The platform I play on is usually determined by 3 things: Control type (EG no RTS for consoles), system requirements and price. Oh and whether or not I have the platform, I don't have a PS3 so for obvious reasons I can't play any of those big PS3 exclusives like MGS4 or... er... MGS4

IronChitlin: I have gone back and forth over time. I still have fond memories of playing Utopia with my brother on the old Intelivision, as well as seeing Wolf 3d and Doom for the first time on PC.
I was a console gamer when i was younger and now I have emulators to relive the nostalgia on my PC (Streets of Rage FTW!!!!). I have a 360 but I can't remember the last time I turned it on, for now at least my gaming life is firmly rooted in PC land.

Weclock: emulators on the wii, right? you wouldn't be pirating would you?
