Dear gog.com peeps.

Please try and get your hands on Close Combat III: The Russian Front. A Bridge Too Far is another excellent game, but TRF is the pinnacle of what is a very well made, tactical, and endlessly entertaining World War II combat simulator.

My summary:
-----------------------------

What's cool about it:
- Command your authentic WWII armies across huge historically inspired maps, fighting tactical warfare at the mercy of line of sight and the full range of weapons available to WWII generals in real time.
- Carry troops over from mission to mission, perfecting your armies and tactics, get to know your soldiers down to the last man.
- The third and best installment in an award winning series of tactical WWII strategy games.

Overview:
The Eastern front, 1941-1945. The massive Russian army is going up against the might of the Nazi war machine and it's superior equipment and training. The enemy has penetrated deep into Soviet lands and it's up to you to turn the tide of the war.

Have your troops sneak along hedgerows, take cover in newly blasted craters and fire off rockets in the desperate hope of taking out the terrifying Nazi tank that has nosed out from behind a farmhouse. Engage in urban warfare, holding on by the skin of your teeth as each new building or courtyard could hide the deadly fire of a sniper, a flamethrower or a whole squad of troopers.

Visceral audio and clear graphics with a slick interface that holds up to modern standards with flying colors come together to deliver to you everything you would ever want in realistic, blood and guts WWII combat.

ah; didn't know
Wasn't it remade recently as http://www.matrixgames.com/products/335/details/Close.Combat.-.Cross.of.Iron

The pricing of the remake is iffy though. Also, I don't take kindly to games where defensive AI rushes my attacking forces.
Yep, Slitherine-Matrix and Strategy 3 Tactics have the rights to the series now. Cross of Iron was the remake of 3, but it also includes CC3 in it's entirety as a separate game.
