realkman666: Where can you get their games DRM-free? I think maybe Gamersgate, or their website?
avatar
hummer010: Almost all of the steam games from Paradox are DRM-free.
No, I mean a proper DRM-free. I'm pretty sure they offer them somewhere.
avatar
amund: Looks nice, hope it will be good and can actually compete with Simcity 4. One sad thing is that Paradox seems to do Steam-exclusives these days so I doubt it will come here. If it does, probably a few years after several dozen DLC releases.
Fixed that for ya ;)

Yeah, it's called GTA.

Mine is a hole in the dirt filled with harmful things and un-populated by dead lemmings. Can I have that again ?

Wouldn't be too sure about that given their history and reasons for switching over to Steam in the past:

"And no, there won't be a non-steam version.. We had a huge forum-demand for a non-steam version of CK2, and it had an even less percent of the market than we had expected. "
And this quote:

Why EU4 requires Steamworks. by Johan (Paradox)

There are several reasons for only making a steam wrapped game build.

1) Maintaining multiple versions of the game for testing and distribution is a large cost in time and attention for us as a development studio. To be frank, we prefer to use the time and energy to improve the gameplay experience for the gamer, add new features and updates/patches to the game for free for the gamers - rather than using the time to support several different game builds.

2) Steam is very easy to work with when it comes to creating patches and updates.

3) Steam has pretty much the entire market, so spending 50% of the testing time for patch deployment for a tiny fraction just doesn't make sense for us.

4) A large chunk of customers at other online retailers buys steam versions of other games, so our hopes is that we won't lose all those customers, but that they will understand why we have decided on steam only and stay with us.

5) Customer support costs. A large majority of our customer support comes from people that is not on Steam that has trouble installing things correctly.

6) Steam provides a lot of technology that makes it easier for us to develop games, which makes us able to focus on the quality of the game instead of making our own network api.

We aim to support Steam workshop, Achievements and other things in Europa Universalis IV as well, but that was never relevant to our decision to go steam-only.

That Europa Universalis IV will be steam only was a decision we as a development studio took in a strategy for the future to create better games, being able to support the games for a very long time and ongoing add new free content updates and patches for all you gamers

Mind, those were in relation to EUIV, not this game. Things may have changed.

This, in my opinion, is the worst thing about the digital delivery platform.

In the past, I didn't mind expansions, hell, I paid good money for expansions. Expansions were generally worth it though. Bioware had some great expansons: Tales of Sword Coast, Throne of Bhaal, Heart of WInter.

Ton's of these little DLC's are just annoying, and a lot of them are worthless. $2 so my character can wear different clothes? No thanks.

This of course, leads to one of my other pet peeves of the gaming industry right now: The super-deluxe-everything-but-the-seven-new-DLC's-we'll-be-releasing-next-week version of games.

I agree, I miss the days of expansions. Sometimes it felt like a new game and to get that now it's pretty much up to user-made content if the game support modding which is becoming more and more rare.

When it comes to the deluxe editions that's popular today it makes you wonder how really deluxe they are. It's more or less just a number of DLC packs with or without developer commentaries which of course you have to pay extra for since it's a "deluxe edition". It won't be the same as expansions and I'm guessing those days are gone.

It also don't help that you have to pay to test games, demos are gone. All these alpha/betas are just paid demos, I highly doubt the majority who buy these do it to find bugs and report them. They are broken preorders. I think all else things hurt development for most game developers in the long run.

I purchased and played exactly one early access game, and learned my lesson from it. It was Kerbal Space Program, which is a fantastic game. I really enjoyed it. I played the crap out of it. Now they've released a bunch of updates with some cool new stuff, but I'm having a hard time getting into a game I played the crap out of already.

I've bought a couple other early access games, but I refuse to play them until they are final. I don't want to play the crap out of half of a game.
