Every time I try to star the game it just gives me a black screen and I can't do anything other than press esc (which closes it sometimes) or tab out, which gives another shank window saying "Saved dump file to 'shank.mdmp'".

Anyone know how to get it running?

Rather that saying non-Steam, saying where you did get it would be helpful. ;)

Probably the humble bundle DRM free version.

To the OP:

While it might not be a perfect solution, you could try running it through Steam(code is in the bundle)/Origin, (every code can be redeemed on Origin). Maybe something is missing that the Stam/Origin version installs. A long shot, but I can't help you otherwise.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. If that was his answer I was then going to ask if he downloaded the game as soon as he bought the bundle, because I have a feeling that there was a bug in the first DRM-free build that was fixed a couple of days into the bundle.
Just downloaded it last night.

Yeah it's the humble bundle version. Was kinda hoping I wouldn't have to d/l it again through steam.. 1.7gb you know.
Just because I'm not sure, have you played the Steam version and got it working and just the non steam one is borked or you've only tried the DRM free version?

What are your computer specs?

I played it when it was released (the HB version ) it worked back then, I just tried to re-downloaded it to see if they change something, will test in 30 minutes.

Did you check if the "dump" file is a binary one of some sort of human readable log ?

EDIT: Ok just tried, HB version, freshly downloaded and it works fine. I even tried to play part of the first level with no issues (On Win7 64bits / ATI card / Disconnected from the net)

Are you sure you have the latest update of DX and the latest Visual C++ runtimes installed ?

Dell Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4500 @2.2 ghz
4 GB RAM
32 bit OS

AMD Radeon HD 6600 series (driver is up to date)

I've not tried the Steam version. One strange thing I noticed is there is no installation file?
I unzipped the game from the zipped file, and the file to start it up is in the bin folder inside the Shank_HIB folder. I thought that was strange and it just doesn't seem right to me.

I checked the dump file. It's not readable. Or rather notepad could open it but it's all gibberish.

Same here, probably the Shank devs didn't bother creating a custom installer for the HB. But starting the Shank.exe worked fine for me.

I just noticed that in the "install" (unzip folder if you prefer : Shank_HIB) there are two files called "crash.log" and "game.log".

Delete them then try to start the game, they should be recreated and contains information about what went wrong.

Finally decided to give up and install it on Steam. Now it gets stuck on the "Use a controller or DIE" screen. =/

Did you look at the content of either game.log or crash.log ?
I had Steam check the game's file integrity and it replaced a few. The game worked then and I've already finished it on normal (and gotten 9 of 12 achievements). xD
"(and gotten 9 of 12 achievements). xD "

Ow god, he's doomed xD
