Can't say anything particular about asus but gtx 660 is a decent piece of hardware.
Yeah, GPUs, CPUs, motherboards, disks and whatnot can suddenly and inexplicably die.

You known, the fact that modern electronic devices just work as intended most of the time is a miracle already....

solzariv: Look for an exploded capacitor.
If that happens, you'll hear a "bang" as the capacitor explodes, filling your computer with a fine yellow dust.
(Speaking from experience, when a capacitor exploded on my old graphics card the bang was quite loud)

yeah i would guess so. The card looks fine from the outside. no broken or damaged parts. It isn´t even that old. maye 3 years or so. And it´´s the first card which died on me; accidentally it´s also the most expensive card i had so far ;) all my cheapo cards still work fine even after longer usage and being in a worse tower environment.
