jamyskis: and that fucking poster - "Keep Calm and Carry On".
That's from the second world war. It's only used now because it's kind of funny.

Quite the story behind that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_calm_and_carry_on

"Keep Calm and Carry On was a propaganda poster produced by the Government of the United Kingdom in 1939 during the beginning of the Second World War, intended to raise the morale of the British public in the event of a Nazi invasion of Britain."

Interesting. I'm wondering if in the last stages of the war Germany had similar posters. "Schnauze und mach weiter" - I'd love it.

Parvateshwar: Our military is almost always met with resistance when they want to do things, for instance the security at the Olympics had protests because they were using soldiers and missiles.
avatar
AFnord: Wait, why were they using missiles to defend the Olympics? That does sound more than a tad bit excessive, to be honest.
That's what I thought and went out and protested like hell when they put one in my park. I read somewhere that it was the American delegation that was requiring all sorts of ridiculous security measures and that's why we had missiles and an aircraft carrier in London.

I'm pretty sure by the end of the war they were praying that the Allies got to them before the Soviets did...Translate 'Welcome English!' please.

Both Brittan and Australia are falling over themselves in the rush to become fascist states! but i use the term fascist somewhat lightly with acknowledgement that there are still many differences, but also having awareness of the similarities!

While this thread is more base on what society does in the name of 'security', lets not forget what society does in the name of 'safety'

Recently here in Australia there was an elderly man who died after getting upset because police got him for riding his bike (push bike) without a helmet.

I can imagine that this man has probably lived his whole life without even giving a thought to his freedom to choose weather or not to wear a helmet. Now in the twilight of his life he is confronted with this idiocy.... i mean you and i are probably more used to the 'nanny state' but the older generations, it must seem so completely stupid to them?

Speaking in a German accent... "you must wear a helmet", "you must wear a sealbelt", you must you must you must..... all hail our new Nazi masters!

SimonG: Have we already mentioned that all Americans are jingoistic, xenophobic, fat and stupid? I not, I'm calling dibs on that.
Hey, I'm not fat! I'm big-boned!

*grins* Sure, there is an obesity problem in America. That is because we are getting a head start for the next ice age with all that extra insulation to keep us warm. Just wait...McDonald's was the creation of a super secret scientific project to prepare for the upcoming end of the world....

I thought it's official by now that McDonald's does not make people fat, at least as long as you avoid Coca Cola.

Lone3wolf: I think that what's worse about the OP is that far more people actually vote for "winner" on multiple "reality" shows, than ever vote (in recent history, anyway) for who is allowed to gain power in government.....it's utterly pathetic.
I agree with your entire post but I just wanted to quote that bit and say that I don't see how I can vote in the next election. I've always voted in the past and it's not suddenly out of apathy but out of a shared disgust for the candidates, I don't see anyone who's remotely fit for the power.
