Do Blizzard games have DRM?

Starcraft 2 might (I don't really know), WoW obviously since there is no single player mode, the rest of it does not.

If you patch Warcraft 3 it gets rid of the CD check. Same goes for Diablo 2 I think, and maybe Starcraft 1.

Yes, all of the CD checks were patched out a while ago. Similarly you can register your key on a Battle.net account and download the games from there -- most likely why the CD checks were removed.

As Starcraft 2 owner, I assure you that it has online DRM. Not so happy with it, but by far not so crappy like Ubisoft.

Games that are DRM-free (if we exclude the serial number which is required only if you want to play on Blizzard's legit Battle.Net servers):

Warcraft 3 and the expansion
Starcraft and the expansion
Diablo 2 and the expansion

Here's what you'll do. If you buy the games, create a Battle.Net account, and use the above games' serial numbers to register your games there. Then you can download an up to date version of the games that don't have DRM.

By the way, afaik, back in the days, Blizzard were using their own custom disc check DRM.

World of Warcraft can't be considered a DRM filled game because it is a MMO and as a such you obviously need an account to play online. Other than that account, nothing else is required. :)

Starcraft 2 has a custom "DRM", similar to what Diablo 3 will be using. You'll be able to play the single player "DRM-free" (offline mode) if you log on at least once every 30 days. You need your account for playing on Battle.Net's servers.

Playing offline mode requires online activation. That's online DRM. And it's official, not just my point of view. ;)

I should of been more clear. I'm talking about the DRM that gets installed on to your computer like Securom.

Starcraft 2 doesn't have any third party DRM. The older ones with disc checks, I have no idea.

I might mention WOW doesn't have traditional DRM, but it does have The Warden, a process which conceals itself from the user. People who don't like random crap running on their machines have taken issue with The Warden in the past.

If you're playing a downloaded version of WC3 off Battle.net doesn't it have the same DRM as SC2 or close to? Like an authenticating launcher or something? They don't just hand you a DRM free version like GOG does, do they?

Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, and Starcraft 1 can be played completely offline. A valid CD key is needed to play on battle.net though, and there's a less strict local check for the CD key when you install (even if a key has been banned from battle.net, you can install and play offline).

I still think Starcraft 2 should drop the logging in every month thing. It is a mainly online game but it can still be played just as well single player or on the lan. What about people without Internet access.

So there's literally no DRM on the downloaded version? Or does the install lock to your hardware or something?
