I'm always looking for some good music, and I wondered what if anything the fine folks here like to listen to video game wise. Heh...even my game-playing friends scoff at my love for video game music...I can't be the only nerd who listens to this kind of stuff...

Ok...here are my three all time favorites:

God of War II OST - Epic, dark and visceral...great in game or out.

Xenosaga III - A nice variety of styles, but the lighter string and piano arrangements are where it's at. The music does a great job of evoking memories of the most important moments of the game.

Skyrim - I particularly love the light, unobtrusive exploration music. Great for meditation, relaxation and bedtime. :)
Morrowind soundtrack is epic.
I also very much like original Baldurs Gate soundtrack.

I recently played Two Worlds 2 and fell in love with the soundtrack, and especially with the pieces of the Pirates of the Flying Fortress add-on.
Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim are great soundtracks too. The Witcher games also have very beautiful music. Diablo 1+2 also stand out, though I'm not a great fan of the games myself.

For something completely different - one of my favourites of all time is the Quake 1 soundtrack. I sometimes use it for ominous or oppressing, menacing scenes in my PnP RPG group. But it's not really listenening while doing some work or household chores.

For another style of music, nearly everything by Nobuo Uematsu is brilliant. That guy is crazy - working with so many influences and themes and still managing to compose beautiful and catchy yet complex themes.

Of my Amiga days I remember the Turrican (1-3, with 2 being the best) and Apidya soundtracks best, all by Chris Huelsbeck.

But there are so many good soundtracks from the past and in the present - it's really hard where to start. If I thought it made sense (and had the time) I could easily compile a list of maybe 50+ games where I really liked (and remember) the music.
The Battle for Wesnoth soundtrack. Especially this one song - it's just plain epic:

I 2nd the Quake 1 Soundtrack, it is great, composed by NIN. I listened to it a lot back then, since you could throw it just into the cd player - no buy the the soundtrack, no dlc, it was included on the normal game cd.

I would desribe it as dark ambient.

I always mention Festival of Immortals from Divinity II because it's fucking amazing and when I first got to where it plays in the game I actually had to stop and listen.
The entire soundtrack is good but this - this is just. (I just threw my hands in the air IRL.)

Other than that, Deus Ex HR also has nice music and then, of course, there is and [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb9HB3Hb1b0]Arcanum and The Cat Lady and Mass Effect and maybe I'll shut up now or else I might never stop.

I do have a thing for the dragon battle music in Skyrim as well.
And let's not forget the Primordia Soundtrack - I do not know why but it has always a calming effect, when I listen to it.

Silent Hill The Room Ost

And Theophany remix of Time's End it's such an epic music...

I'm with you! I freaking loved DX: HR's soundtrack, and Shadowrun Returns' as well! I have a soft spot for things like it, though, cyberpunk/sci-fi stuff done well provides such a great background soundscape. I also loved the original ME's soundtrack quite a bit as well.

Ye-es. Shadowrun Returns, I am disappointed that the soundtrack isn't part of GOG's extras in this case.
I loved DX:HR in general even though I was mighty suspicious of a lot of features at first.
Mass Effect music just added so much to the actual epic moments, like approaching the Citadel for the first time.

Oh dammit, Fallout New Vegas' soundtrack - when the start-up music plays I get all giddy. I love the songs on the radio as well and still sing along like an idiot while most people say they are sick of those.
My fav game OSTs would be Freedom Fighters and Hitman: Contracts, both by Jesper Kyd, as well as Silent Hill 2's by Akira Yamaoka. When it comes to more retro stuff my fav would be the Turrican 2 OST by my bestest friend Chris Hülsbeck.

Whenever this topic comes up I always suggest LucasArts Outlaws soundtrack. It's an excellent Ennio Morricone (The Good, The Bad and the Ugly among others) inspired soundtrack. I am also partial to the Fallout 1/2 soundtracks by Mark Morgan and the Oblivion soundtrack by Jeremy Soule (especially like the track Harvest Dawn.)

For more recent game soundtracks I quite like the quirky vibe of Machinarium, the ethereal/ambient sound of Endless Space and of course the often praised (rightfully) soundtrack for Bastion.
