hedwards: A lot of the games run into licensing issues as a result of them using real cars. They opted to license the cars, but not to get a license that covered the game in perpetuity, which means that GOG or somebody would have to get a new license with the automakers where applicable.

MaximumBunny: Ah, basically what Telltale and Activision + Marvel do. I never understood that logic.
The license covers the period of time they're expecting to be selling the games. And extending it in perpetuity would be a lot more expensive.
and [url=http://www.gog.com/game/screamer_2]Screamer 2 are nice arcade style racers. Well worth a try if you like games like Ridge Racer.
I'd really like to have those Codemasters racing games back (yes I realize they are not coming back, due to stupid license thingies and stuff). Too bad I apparently joined GOG after they were removed from the catalog.

Very nice to have GRID here, though. That I already have. Racing games are the kind of games that IMHO age badly, so usually newer is better (unless the game has been dumbed down since the old versions).

True, but it does mean that those games come with a built-in expiration date. Once that is up, those games can never be sold legally again, ever. There's a recipe for piracy if I ever saw one.

No argument there, the industry is rather notorious for failing to plan for the future.

Yes, but OTOH, running over the horse never gets old.

I do wish they'd experiment more with hidden paths and easter eggs. One of my disappointments with the genre is that few games have really taken to offering short cuts and such when having people racing through town. I think Big Red Racing had the best short cuts, the ability to take those fucking airboats off track and onto the land was fucking epic.

GRID is two games in one: if you have traction control and such dialled in and play it on a keyboard, it resembles an arcade racer, whereas things get more realistic if you have access to a gamepad (I've got a Thrustmaster GPX) or a wheel and then turn driver aids off. It won't become a simulator by any means, but still.

EDIT: There are drifting competitions as well, with a Japanese announcer who sounds so excited you'd be forgiven for thinking he's in the car with you. He alone makes the game worth the bucks.

I'm not a huge fan of racing games, but I need one at least once in a while. And I have to say, GRID covers that need pretty damn good. I doubt I will need to buy another racer on GOG.com for the next few years, I feel pretty satisfied with GRID.

Although if we ever get Burnout or one of the good Need for Speeds here, I might be tempted.

triock: Flatout 2.
Yup. Love that game. This and GRID are most definitely the cream of GOG's racing crop.

Yeah, anything by Criterion is pretty damn good - I was just playing Burnout Paradise the other day, actually...
I can say GRID is awesome, have it on Steam but not here. Drift mode is super fun, and the AE86 is in it! :D
Yes, sadly most of you missed TOCA 3 and CMR 2005. I'm so glad I got those.

I don't have GRID but I do have GRID 2, any comparison?

I don't have GRID 2, but from what I've heard, most fans of the first one really didn't like the sequel.
