I plan to finally play Fallout 3(bought the id/bethesda pack when it was on sale last summer) sometime over the next few months and was wondering what the best mods are. A search shows me a lot of them.

Post your favorite Oblivion mods if you want as well, I also need to get to it eventually.
New Vegas is the best mod for Fallout 3. :P
Why don't you play it vanilla first? :) GOTY version has it all for 100-200 hours play time.

Always wonder why people play a game for the first time with mods.

Both Oblivion and Fallout are stable enough and fixed after their last patches. It's not necessary to "fix" them as some players always say. Play them vanilla and then when you get bored of it, if you ever get bored, start new game with mods.
http://angryaboutlife.blogspot.com/2010/07/fallout-3-modding-for-dummies.html < Little guide I wrote up on modding it.

Here are some you should try:

Mothership Zeta Crew
FWE
NMC's Texture Pack
DC Interiors
Energy Visuals Enhanced
Unofficial Patch
Project Beauty
Fellout
Weapon Mod Kits
Marts Mutant Mod

Nearly forgot the most important one. Darn's UI

If there's one to make it not horribly boring install that one:)

I'd suggest for maximun enjoyment go high Repair, Sneak, and Melee, add in unarmed later on, there's some great fists. Punching the head off a Deathclaw always results in some enjoyment.

I think you can min/max your way to 100 in everything, and I know you can get 10 in all stats by level 25 (if you have the first DLC).

I didn't play through the whole game but I did play it vanilla on PS3 a bit so thought I'd try some mods this time.
Ah got it. :)

Maybe later if I finish III this time. XD I was tempted to grab it when it dropped to $20.
Darn's UI mod is awesome and essential.

As for other stuff, I don't really use mods.

Delixe: snip
Thanks for the list I will check at least some of those out.

There is no real reason to play without the texture mods and project beauty as they don't change anything in the vanilla game. I would argue Fellout or any other tint changer plus the streetlights mods are fine to add as well if you want to play close to vanilla. Stuff like DC Interiors and Weapon mod kits adds more to the game withouth changing the vanilla game as well.

XP You said *exactly* what my first thought was when I read the title.

I did use weapon mods in my second playthrough actually... forgot about that. As for textures and stuff I just prefer to keep the game looking how the developers designed it.
At the bare minimum DarnUI. It makes Fallout 3 look like it should on a PC without over large fonts/menus.

Other than that there are tons of mods out there, quite a few add nifty stuff [some add OP stuff]. fo3nexus.com is the main place to go see what is available.

I use a decent number of mods right now - though I started out only with DarnUI and Fellout [I like the dark nights].
Check this out.

If my memory serves me correctly, there's a mod that makes pokémon battle theme play during all the fights. It's essential for the proper experience.
