I really, really don't think the original campaign is legally free guys. I don't want to start a flamewar or derail the topic, but I'm virtually positive this is the case. If they're distributing the original game with their installer, that's illegal.
That said, all the downloads in their installer are optional, so you can untick it. The other fanmade campaigns are themselves awesome and worth the download.

So this also includes the original campaign? I'm a little confused now. :| Freespace 2 was supposed to be one of the first games which I was planning to buy here. I don't know if this version is fully legal. As I wrote, never heard that the original capaign has been released with the source code. I think I'm going to support Volition with my few dollars (or take the free game code ;)). Anyway thanks Veloxi, Acoote and others. :)

Yes, it includes the original campaign that's a used as a mod for Freespace 2. This way you get both games. Personally I'd buy both games on GOG here, then get this for the rest of the stuff.

the most important part to remember about GOG when compared to this free freespace 2, is that the extras it comes with being a GOG title.
the community, the manual, the soundtrack, the reference card, and hi-res wallpaper all come with your purchase, plus you have the guarantee of the GoG.com servers being 'always' available. That you can download it as many times as you want, burn it to a CD, and there is no DRM (this applies too all the extras as well).
So in my opinion the GOG.com one is far superior.

I think the best part is the XP and Vista compatibility, tech support and lack of DRM.
But yeah, I think the Open Source Project's distribution of FS2 is dubious legality, but I still recommend it for the FANmade content, which the original IP holder doesn't own.

I'm gonna be honest, Freespace 2 is the very next title I'm going to buy, I remember reading about it and dreaming to get it, but never had the chance at the time. But I am SUPER enjoying Fallout right now, so I don't think I'd be able to get it too soon.. Redneck Rampage beat it out, I admit, but only because I love making fun of Rednecks. I work in the tech support for an entertainment industry (not as filthy as it sounds) and rednecks from Mississippi are constantly calling me asking me how to fix their various issues, going off into tangents about jesus or their whore sister/mother/brother/neice/uncle/father who all happens to be the same person, sleeping with their dog.

Well, at the moment the best game is Shogo. I have played it before and it is nice to see version which have modified work with Vista and XP.
