Hear ye! hear ye!

By King's decree the mighty kingdom of GOG is seeking for brave and valiant adventurers who will help to retrieve the great lost treasures from Ubisoft. The path ahead of those who will undertake this task is strewn with dangerous enemies and dreadful places. Many heroes won't come back in one piece, but for those who will succeed a great prize awaits at the end.

The first quest to become a GOG Hero starts today! We need you to help us spread the word about our new, upcoming Ubisoft releases. To do that all you need is just retweet this message "Become a GOG Hero, help spread the word about our new Ubisoft releases, and win a free GOG game #gogcom http://t.co/MJWo2JG" before Sunday, March 13 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. By completing this quest you'll automatically enter for a drawing of 1 of 100 free game codes from GOG.

That's only the first quest in the upcoming weeks. If you don't want to participate this time, don't worry. Everyone who participates in at least one quest will become a GOG Hero and will be eligible to win great loot with the big, special prize at the very end.

You're asking what's the grand prize? What is the main thing that every hero needs? (No, unfortunately we won't be giving away a princesses’ hand in marriage, sorry.) We'll reward the greatest GOG hero with a real sword, a GOG branded shield, and $150 USD worth of GOG games!

And another competition goes by without my participation. I am one of the few people (around 10 or so) in the world, that don`t think of "Twitter", "Facebook", "Xing", "MySpace", etc.,etc. as the greatest invention since sliced bread.

So, yes...I AM a fossil. And you know what...? I`m proud to be!

Only thing that annoys me, is that more and more competitions require the membership in these so-called "social networks".

But why complain?... No one has ever claimed, it would be easy to be the rock in the stream and watch all the dead fish float by. *extremelybroadgrin*
I SHALL HAVE THOSE ARTICLES OF WEAPONRY F'IT'S THE LAST ITEM I PROCURE DURING MY LIFETIME!

I don't really need them considering I'm a mage and all, but who cares. GOGSWORD!

Oh, and thank you for the new releases too. :3

You know why so many competitions use this, don't you? It means that when I entered the competition, all 200 of my followers saw my message, and may get interested in GOG, even if just for the competition. It's all about pagehits and new customers.
yay! new codemasters games!

o wait...

still, i hope GOG completes the Sands of Time trilogy.

or maybe Rogue Spear?

XIII was pretty bad, imo.

Grandia II PC port? D:

AndrewC: They rarely do because (1) the default account is public
That's hardly an argument, given that most every single experienced user of a service alters the default settings in the cause of their venture. Though it is less likely in this specific case, default isn't a good reason not to mention something :(

AndrewC: (2) you are informed of the things I said (reply display and hashtag/search visibility) when you switch it to protected.
Well, Twitter might mention this, but the question is on how GoG traces these (re)tweets. I'll have to confess that I have not the slightest idea of the Twitter API (or if there IS even such a thing), but hitting the 'tweet' button might very well trigger an event launched by the Twitter page that notifies the GoG page of user XXX retweeting the message YYY and the GoG database adding account ZZZ to the list of competitors. That is at least how things should look like from a programmer's perspective.

I'd dare say that the number is vastly different in this community from the amount and kind of response in this thread, despite the number of participating users.

Then again, you'll have to evaluate the target audience as well. Good old games might (or might not) appeal more to a group of people that doesn't want to be bothered by social networks.

This is what I'm saying; GOG can't trace these (re)tweets as long as they don't follow you because once your profile is private hashtags done from your account don't appear in global search and a user doesn't get mentions from private accounts unless he follows those accounts.

As per the API, when a user includes a username it causes an @reply action and the user named in the tweet is notified about this on his @mentions page. This DOES NOT happen if the person who tweets has a private account and the recipient of the tweet (the person mentioned in the tweet) doesn't follow the user who tweets.

As for (Twitter style*) retweets, the API informs the user about the retweet which can then be seen on the Your tweets, retweeted page. Again, the notification doesn't take place if the user doing the retweet has a private account and is not followed by the user whose tweet gets retweeted.

*Old style retweets (RT @username: text) are handled as @replies and follow the same rules as mentioned above.

In short, the only way to participate in this contest (and all contests) via Twitter is to either have a public account or to be followed by the account that holds the contest (in this case @GOGcom must follow you) if your account is protected.

Even if GOGcom is using a script and the Twitter API to centralize the usernames of the users who (re)tweeted the message, which is unlikely (using the Twitter API part) the (re)tweets generated by private accounts won't get displayed.

Well, I retwitted it ) I'm a hero ) Big good old act-I hero *laugh*
I would like to join this fine competition, but I don't do Twitter or Facebook, or any other social web media other than selected few forums and discussion threads.

Ah well, good luck to all who do participate!
Don't care if I lose (and I'm sure I will). I'm already a GOG Hero, haha! :)
Did it :D Waiting for the best :D
Oh wow, this would be the perfect addition to my collection!
I shall support this quest with my best knight, for I believe Ubisoft has the rights to Hype: The Time Quest, of which would be of great worth to my kingdom.

thelovebat: Except for the fact that most people who use the internet already have a facebook account for things like keeping in touch with friends, networking......so it wouldn't really be forcing it on anyone, maybe one or two people if anyone.
Don't generalise. Even if the 600 millionish claim by facebook is accurate (multible accounts, fake/scam accounts, not used/abandoned accounts etc.), that makes less than third of the 2 billion internet users (2010 estimate) in the world.

I for one have neither account and have no intention of getting either as I've yet to find a use for them but that's just me.
We already have our heroes against UBISOFT working diligently against the continued instigation of it's always online DRM requirement of it's latest games *Sniggers.
