I know this is nothing to do with games but I thought I'd mention the current plight of the only listenable music station in the UK. Plans have been leaked that the BBC plan to axe this unique alternative digital radio station http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article7041826.ece.
If any of you listen to the station you will know how I feel, the majority of the DJs have extensive musical knowledge and have freedom to express their own tastes. If you tune in now you'll hear Craig Charles (yes Lister from Red Dwarf) presenting his weekly funk and soul show and Friday nights host Bruce Dickenson's rock show.

This is a symptom of a larger problem, the attacks on the BBC from various organisations.

I can understand some of the arguments against the BBC and I certainly think it's internet profile is far to large, but it provides some of the best TV in the world. The content BBC 6music provides is not duplicated by any other radio station and is the perfict example of public service radio.

Andy_Panthro may be thinking of stuff like media mogul Rupert Murdoch attacking BBC for providing free news. Murdoch basically wants to outlaw all free news content because it competes with his own content (which of course you have to pay for)

It's not only that, with the current downturn in advertising many commercial stations are trying to take chunks out of the BBC to reduce the competition. The BBC is guanteed it's income and does not have to rely on advertising so anything it does that takes viewers/listeners from commercial stations is viewed with suspicion. That and the likely Conservative government we may be getting in the next few months puts the BBC in troubled water.

Despite not being British I totally love the BBC. I enjoy a lot of the content they produce - through the internet (podcasts, streaming radio etc.) or by buying DVDs and CDs. Also, BBC's Norwegian counterpart NRK licenses a lot of their stuff. I'd hate to see the BBC having to cut back.

Same as Tor. I love their documentaries and I listen as often as I can the BBC on radio (world update).

I don't understand why it's 6 Music (and Asian Network, don't forget) being targeted, when they probably have amongst the lowest budgets of any of the BBC's stations, and are also the most unique so probably pose the least threat to commercial rivals - I can't imagine too many of 6Music's listeners, should it be switched off, deciding to tune to Heart instead!!

Both ITV and Sky both want the BBC to be neutered completely. They think it's responsible for their dropping advertising revenues.
The BBC often gets attacked for things like 6music (not popular enough for what it costs), or for things like Strictly Come Dancing (too populist for the BBC, stuff like that should only be on commercial TV).
It also gets attacked for the big wages of people like Jeremy Clarkson (despite Top Gear being one of the shows that the BBC sell around the world for lots of money).
That's not even mentioning news output, for which the BBC provides free web news. Murdoch wants to put his news sites behind pay-walls, but can't do that if people can access the BBC for a minimal fee.
It's crazy really.
I'm for the BBC, I think for the £142.50 I pay per year, it's amazingly good value.

The BBC produce some of the best TV ever made, its no wonder they're seen as such a threat. If only the ABC here was so productive...

The BBC definitely have a long history of amazing documentaries, and scientific programs : Look at "The Sky At Night" - Astronomy program on once a Lunar Month for the best part of 60 years. Sir Patrick of Moore has only missed one episode in that time - a bout of shellfish food poisoning a few years ago.
Horizon; Panorama; Nature-related all narrated by Sir David of Attenborough. The list is amazing. Long live the BBC. Tell those idiots like Murdoch to "F* ORFF!"

If 6music was to close then I would not listen to any music radio. XFM probably it's closest competitor has gone downhill completely in the last 6 or 7 years since I stopped listening to it and Absolute (Virgin) radio is mind numbingly dull. I'm going to have to rely on word of mouth and support bands at gigs to discover new music now.
Such a shame.
