why can't I gift this game? I don't understand. :(
What better way to let someone know than through email, why do I have to send them a link from myself?
:(
edit:
I'm whining and crying, I know, but we should be allowed to use the gift option for any game!

Just send em a link and some good wishes.
Just tell the person to come here and make an account and they can grab it for free them self. They would need an account no matter what in order to get the game anyway.
I know but an official looking GOG.com email is super fun, and makes me look less like a skeezy bastard.
But that's kinda like getting one of those free sampler DVDs of a TV network, and then wrapping it up in something really fancy; it makes you look like you're trying to look like you're NOT cheap, even though you are :P.

my friends are really stingy and they don't trust me, they always think I'm trying to cheat them, when I've never done it. You see my rep, you see I like to help people. But anyway, I figure if they saw some sort of anonymous invite in their email about the games, as opposed to me going "oh hey guys, this is pretty cool check this out." they're actually more likely to check it out..
Hey, Weclock is right. Maybe they'd not call it a gift, but an invite or something.
People love free stuff. If we can send links to the free games GoG is hosting to get them to sign up, that's a good thing, right? Right now, giving gifts is a great way to introduce friends to GoG, but being able to "gift" the free stuff would allow even us cheapskates.
"Gifting" a free game? Stingy :-P
It's not stingy, it's ECONOMICAL. There's a recession on you know...

Don't need to fool around.... recession or not, if something is free remains free, period :-p
sending an invite and making notice of a free game hardly sounds stingy.

Yeah that's true, but I methinks calling it something that's not a "gift" would be the right way to go. Like a "Tell a friend!" sorta dealie.
But verbiage aside, we all concur it's a decent idea?

No, not really. As was said before, it makes you look like a cheap bastard if you go to all the trouble of sending something that others could get for free in a really expensive-looking way.
Well I actually do think it's a good idea.
It's all in the delivery, because your delivery is what shapes people's expectations.
If you were to call it a gift, then the person would have that moment of realisation - "Oh, it's free... not really a gift".
I think Weclock is right in saying there's nothing wrong with just pointing out to people that there's something available for free; just lettin' them know that it's there.
