Best movie I've seen in years. Definitely go see it in 3D!

Saw it today in 3D (but not imax). It was great, the story is on the weaker side but its still a great experience.

I just saw it, and I think it may be one of my favorite movies ever. Not to be too harsh, but they should fire that guy who made the early teasers. The 3D is finally done perfectly, the CG blends well with the real world, and Sigoruney Weaver Is once again a badass after she was neutered by all those horrible children comedies. Everything, from top to bottom, was spectacular.
They were giving out free posters at the showing, as my theater is known to do, so I've taken one home, framing that puppy, and prominently displaying it over my monitor (Goodbye Max Payne poster! I kept you up for the game rather than the movie, but now one more worthy will share the space of my pre-order bonus Fallout 3 poster), because James Cameron, as always, lived up to the gigantic hype he's created to make one of the best goddamn movies ever. Never will I doubt you. People worried because George Lucas was famed until he came back and made those shitty Star Wars prequels, but you rose above all that and displayed you are still "KING OF THE WORLD!" that you proclaimed yourself when you won the Oscar for Titanic. If this movie doesn't do gangbusters and beat that sonofabitch disgrace of a movie Twilight: New Moon, I will lose every inch of faith in humanity. It's not right for people to worship a sorry sack of shit and ignore a masterpiece.

Sadly, however, people often worship things that they can (or want to) identify with.

People can identify with a creepily-written novel that's practically blood brothers with Anne Rice's stories? Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if this story first popped up on DeviantArt!
Well, the stats have poured in, and Avatar made $3.5 mil for midnight screenings, while New Moon made $26.5 mil. There is no justice in this world. Other big movies earn their success, while Stephanie Myer just writes sexually-charged books that teenage girls can relate to. What does that say of the I.Q. of our society? This is the most miserable feeling I've had in a long, long time.

Very happy I gave it the benefit of the doubt after seeing the trailer. Awe-inspiring fits well.

New Moon made $26.5M just at midnight?! *_*
Well, it is possible, with the invasion of fans during Comic-Con. For the first time there was a giant camping of fans in rage there, of course, for Twilight.
So by the news, Avatar made $27 Million during the first day, not bad. Considering how much people didn't go see it because of the craptrailers, and the fact that for every 1 avatar magazine cover and TV appearance, there was 10 for twilight.

Just bought tickets to this. Gonna go with my missus on 23rd. Waiting to be blown out of my seat cause it will our first 3d movie. Also gonna leave my brain at home so I can enjoy this kind of movie.

CGI was pretty spectacular, although they erred toward rubbery and paint-like textures for the Pandora natives and animals.
The acting was decent, and the script didn't call for any outrageously bad or cliche lines.
The story was extremely predictable and formulaic. If you've seen the three minute long trailer, you basically know what happens. It wasn't bad, but it's not new either.
The political statements and philosophy was a bit too in-your-face for my taste. The first glimpse we see of the human compound is of what looks like a massive chemical plant which spans the length of the base and belches out think smoke and fire. Welcome to Mordor! I mean, really? Really? Also, we don't see any light skimmers or small vehicles. Every single mode of transportation the humans have destroys the environment around them. Oh, and no movie could be complete without obvious (yet stupid) references to current events.

Never saw a trailer, never knew anything more then it was based on an alien world...
I have to say this is the greatest movie Ive seen to date "in my life"
I really cant say more, its a must see, this runs with District 9 as scifi goes, but its NO COMPARISON.... this is what i will be buying in what ever format i can find, im praying for an extended cut on Blu-Ray....

This AND District 9 in one year? I hope one of them wins movie of the year... I just saw it, loved almost all of it (colonel was stupid and the hidden message was absolute nonsense) but other than that it was a spectacle that everyone should see.

My only critique is that the hidden message wasn't hidden at all - it was right in your face most of the time.
I enjoyed the movie immensely. The 3D wasn't too exaggerated as I had feared, it did not constantly throw stuff in your face like some 3D movies have done. Most of it was toned down to a level that wasn't distracting at all.
I had purposely avoided watching trailers, screenshots or even reading reviews and descriptions - so I came to see the move with no idea about the plot was about and almost no preconceptions. I'm glad I did, I was positively surprised.

And an indie film, Moon. :)
Isn't it nice? Different approaches to sci-fi all in the same year. Avatar may be philosophical a bit, D9 sociological, and Moon psychological.
Remember that the movie is rated PG-13, so we will see a lot of families, parents and kids going to the cinema...and it has to be easier to digest for them. ;)
And that is what Cameron aimed for. Sure I would like a more mature setting, but I think he did this as a market decision to catch as many people as possible, and seems that he did it with it's universal story, catching from young to older people.

Well it looks like people are praising it more from a visual/technological perspective which is fine but that generally doesn't do much for me.

Nah everything about it was great, not just the visuals.
