So a friend is playing this now and enjoying it pretty much. Think I might give it another try later.

Actually I'm very pleased to see the classical style RPG is not dead.
I remember some RPG with a similar name (Siege of Avalon), that was made into six chapters but vastly overpriced back then and I think their company went extinct. Maybe GOG can acquire it?
I played Geneforge and it bored the tits off me, gameplay was forgettable (I have), story was just a bunch of 'stuff' and graphics were non existant.

I have to clarify something here.. I am not a graphics whore, but they have to at least be interesting in some way, with the amount of games on the market I'm not going to play a game that looks appaulingly simple, unless the storyline and/or gameplay are good, and I didn't think either were.. I'd heard a lot of people talk the game up so I was surprised it was (imo) as bad as I found it. I accept that later games are better, a lot better even.. but as with books I'm not going to struggle with mediocrity for the first couple just because I've heard it gets better.

Games have to grab me from the first, or at least I should be able to see the inception of 'genius' or a small part of it, I simply don't see anything except cliche and blandness in the Geneforge series.

The later Geneforges are actually better in that regard. Granted, there are still some recycled textures and what not but they do get better.

But as I said, I can get past graphics if it's good gameplay, or story even... but nothing at all about the game appealed to me. I've forgotten how it played, not a good sign, and the story was just a bunch of word.. even if it had the best graphics EVAR, it wouldn't have risen above a 'meh' experience (for me), and I have to admit to being a total RPG junkie.

Yeah, Vogel's writing is a bit dry so it can be hard to get into even if graphics aren't a high priority :D.

There's always the Eschalon games or Knights of the Chalice if you are looking for an indie RPG alternative.
By the way:
the Humble Bundle for Android 2
including.. yes you gessed it:
Avadon: Teh Black Fortress for Windows/Mac(Steam version too of these)/Linux/Android(tablets only)

All versions of Avadon for a dollar? Good heavens! :O Early buyers will burn Vogel alive. :D
