Why do we keep doing it? Portraying them as national heroes, when most of the time they aren't fit to polish a hobo's boots? Sure, they excel at what they do, but outside the ring or field, they are complete douchebags. I wish the media would quit deifying these people.

*yes, this comes on the heels of Lance 'American hero' Armstrong and his confession. But he's far from the only hypocrite in sports.

At least the athletes actually accomplish something, unlike some of those "reality" show stars.

Agreed. For one thing, the money they "earn" is absurd, and the fantasy life they lead is enabled by our worship of them. A vicious cycle.

Right and unlike people that actually deserve it, you're average idiot can sort of understand what they do. Most people seem to have a hard time understanding even basic science.

There are a number of examples of athletes who are exceptions to this and genuinely good role models. One of the problems is that these people generally don't know what to do with so much money and their success goes to their heads. It's hard to say whether or not we would behave differently if we had that sort of income.

For me, some of them deserves it. Such as my national football squad. To bring the championship and medal back home take years of preparation and dedication. Plus they endure lots of abuse from public when things not going according to plan, like losing.

I'm big fan of sports myself. So, if i see my fav athletes achieve something beyond the target, they're heroes in my eyes.
