blotunga: Yes, proper expansions are better than DLCs, however they are still evil in some ways. For example there is no place anymore who sells Dungeon Siege I & II's expansions. Or Diablo Hellfire. This is one of the reasons I wound up preferring to buy games which include all possible content.
I totally agree. I was an absolute sucker for the "unofficial" additional content for the first Age of Empires games. I have no idea how they were allowed to legally sell them cause im pretty sure most of them were not recognized by MS, I must have had about 14 extra discs for Age of Empires, then the game and the official expansion.

But most other things I wont touch DLC unless it actually adds something worthwhile. I point blank refuse to buy cosmetic crap. I have been known to buy base games and the actual content stuff on their own for more money than the "complete" editions that include everything just so I am not supporting this retarded cosmetic DLC cash cow.

blotunga: One more annoying thing about DLCs is the current trend (like Dragon Age, or the Mass Effect games), where the DLCs tie in to the game, so if you finish the game once, and a DLC comes out, you have to finish the game again to play that DLC. In that sense I prefer proper expansions which continue the original game.

Fenixp: Dragon Age and Mass Effect are also the worst handled DLCs I have ever seen. Feel free to sell cosmetic crap and guns shaped like american flags or whatever, but do NOT sell multiple DLC needed to play continuation of the series properly (applies to expansions as well, I always liked them as a supplement, side-stuff, not part of the main plot - sequels exist for that)

Nonetheless, I love the idea DLC represents in general. I love the fact that content can be released in any magnitude and any price a dev wishes - then it's just up to them to make this worth while.
Borderlands 2 is way up there like DA and ME in terms of DLC....actually theres more than both...

Fenixp: That's why you wait for the inevitable Gold edition, which comes for just about anything ever.
Or unless your name is Gearbox or Kalypso, you wait for the definite/final/really complete this time edition.
i have played some of Arcen games such as a valley without wind 1 & 2 , found the games to be pretty good and excellent music what i do worry about them is their quick jump to sequels .Since both games had some serious fixing that was needed.
from what i recall , they released a valley without wind 2 to implement major changes to the first game , while the first game was pretty new since they gave the second game as free to the owners there was no backlash.

and before you had a chance to explore the new game they already announced another new game and so on.

you can have a look here , its just a slew of one game after another with the earlier games still in their infant stage, requiring major patches and fixes still
http://www.arcengames.com/forums/

steam page for publisher as i mentioned right after a valley without wind 2 , newer games were released barely months apart
http://store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Released&sort_order=DESC&developer=Arcen+Games%2C+LLC#category1=998&developer=Arcen%20Games%2C%20LLC&sort_by=Released&sort_order=DESC&page=1

i can see why gog has their concerns
in short arcen games are pretty fun to play and will have excellent music but they really don't stick with one game before you know it there will be a new announcement about a upcoming game, which means the support and development will switch to the newer game
