The LAN parties kind of stopped for me when I finished with highschool little over a decade ago (like sand through an hour glass so are the days of our lives), and I wonder whether it's still common? It seems as if the scene has changed a lot, eg Starcraft 2 that can only be played online now(unless I missed something).
When we first started LAN-ing we used those dreadful coaxial cables with the T-pieces and such. It was a hell of a story to get everyone connected with windows 95/98 in those days. Things got a lot better when we moved over to a hub.
We used to play a lot of Half-life (specifically the crossfire map) and towards the end a lot of CS and unreal tournament. On the strategy front, we had some epic Homeworld and Starcraft battles, and a few anno 1602, Tiberian sun, Red Alert, KKND and Dark Reign battles.
Nowadays its easier to set up a teamspeak server and play online, but there was a certain charm to those LAN parties. Get up, play Half-life, braai, play more half-life listening to Genie in a Bottle on MTV in the background, order pizza (song played constantly during one LAN) and get in bed between 02:00 and 05:00. Good times...
