Fever_Discordia: Well... do you remember anything more about it? Was it Sci-fi/Horror or lighthearted/comedy or 'Space Opera' - even set in space?
American, British, Japanese? Big studio or indie? Anything?
I didn't want to jack the thread talking about my curiosity and was wondering if I should start my own, hopefully the OP won't mind too much since you asked.
It was probably just a PG or PG-13 movie, and I do remember quite a number of details so let me share those rather than try to categorize it, because it was a pretty straightforward "crew on a ship lost in space" sci-fi.
Key elements: there's definitely a pre-lift-off portion in the beginning, all the different crew members calling their families and saying goodbye, a last meal on earth (during a rainstorm, when a younger kid, 13-16, who is going on the mission orders so much food from a food replicator type thing.) It's not "kid"-ish though. He is a super-smart red-head who everyone is like "what is this kid doing on this mission?" even though he is totally the brains and necessary to keep everyone alive, of course. At one point the captain is telling him a bunch of stuff and then says he should be taking notes and the kid taps on his head and says "I am." He also has a romance with the ships computer, who is a complete psychological reproduction of a real person (and model) in the real earth of the movie, used as a sexy voice and interesting element to the movie. They even have like a VR romance where he gets to be with her in a grassy field on a nice day and have romantic moments during his time on the ship in space/trying to repair it. But again, not the full focus of the movie. It may have been a mini-series maybe with all of the things? I don't know!
I think something goes wrong during their cryosleep or something like that and they are lost in space or there are living worlds they didn't imagine would be there when they'd get where they go. I don't remember much about the rest of the crew, some varied personalities with differing views, intentions, and qualities to offer to the mission. A younger jock-issue pilot, a sensible and roughened captain (who I'd recognize if I saw) with that Riker-esque look and demeanor, maybe a little rougher since it is a different type of world, not nearly as polished as the federation. They wear jumpsuit type outfits. Dark green or grey. I don't know what their mission is either, perhaps finding a new earth? It's not the focus, I think the focus is getting their shipping back in working order so they can get functioning how they need to, either back to earth or to their real destination. They encounter alien societies whilst trying to get their ship fixed, there is a cage battle in the vein of Beyond Thunderdome. It feels gritty. There is alien technology/weapon that creates a volatile or void-like "hole" that needs avoided.
There may be other details floating around in my head but that is it for now. Thanks for your/anyones time and consideration of this, help the OP too!!!!
