I loved the crafting system. It is really great to build your stuff, if you are a technocrat. :)
I actually own this one but it was so buggy I didn't get far... i never knew there was a patch. I'll have to give it another shot. I love the concept and the world. *adds to my to play list*
Ah, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Like Troika's other well known game (Vampire Bloodlines: Masquerade), user-created patches made the experience what they needed to be. That said, they were far and away better than most other games released around the same time, and I'd be happy to see either re-released... somehow.
lol, and thers me thinking i was in a minority!... I loved this game and I posted a very similar question a lil while ago in the stonekeep forums on here. (feel free to have a look, i think u might enjoy) I honestly didn't realise so may people know about this game :D thats really great!
Tell me, did any of you go down the multiplayer route? I set up a net game and ran around vormantown by my self for a while but never really went any further. Was it any good?

It's my favorite RPG.
One of the best games ever IMO.

I bought it on ebay some months back but cant get into it although i am determined to play it from stat to finish. I loved the tech v's magic element and the setting was good industrial revolution era with orks and elfs.
Think i may go off and restart it again.
Hopefully it may appear here.
If it shows up here though I strongly suggest they get Drog's patch installed right from the get-go. The list of changes is huge, and it's all stuff that is very much nessesary. Not fan-choice stuff, just pure bug fixes.
Based solely on this thread (and the fact that I really wanted to buy it back in the day), I just got it in the mail from e-bay. The bug fixes in the UA patch is massive, so I'm really looking forward to diving into this one. Social life? What's that?
I'll have to toss my hat in the ring with the "This game rocked" crowd. I hope GOG is able to get it on here, since my copy vanished at some point.

Awesome. I actually found it stacks up with the greats myself. Many folks drone on about it's faults, but frankly I didn't see anything glaring compared to Fallout or Planescape. Some mention the fact that combat becomes to easy eventually, or that it's unbalanced. However is it not the same with Fallout? A suit of powerarmour and the game is over.
oh i didnt know about that patch think ill go grab it. Thanks for the info
Arcanum was a great cRPG, a kind of Fallout but with a mystical stempunk atmosphere instead of a postapocalyptic one.
Maybe i was lucky, but i never had that many bugs with it, certainly nothing prventing me from finishing the game (then again, maybe the American version is more buggy than the French one).
The 2 paths may be unbalanced, but you can still finish the game as a technologist, since the endgame is rather easy, and both paths are equally fun imo.
