I found a demo:
http://www.videogamer.com/pc/drakensang_the_dark_eye/download/demo.html ...and, amazingly enough, this game runs fairly well on my PC. However, I found the first three hours of play to be kind of dull. I know, that was just the tutorial level, but still... This game is often compared to Baldur's Gate. I don't think that's a fair comparison, really, for several reasons.
1. BG was faster-paced. You could start killing stuff almost as soon as the game began.
2. BG was less linear. Complete all the quests in a given area, and then move on? That style of play was already dull when Diablo 2 was young.
3. BG was more compelling. I only finished play a half an hour ago, and I've already forgotten every character's name, including my own. Why? Because none of the characters really seem to have an interesting personality. You can't have long conversations with your henchmen about their personal lives, you can't get into amusing debates with homeless people, and there are no turnip-obsessed gnomes. I'm willing to give this one a pass, though, because I still don't know what the main plot is like... Also, I find it irritating that my own character doesn't really have any personality to speak of. I'm more like a vessel for the story than the object of it...
4. BG didn't use a quest compass. I found it bothersome in games like Oblivion and others that a automatic map basically completely replaced written directions and navigational skills. Then again, the starting quest-map was so small that you could just as easily stumble randomly into your objectives as you could find them with the compass.
5. BG had fewer weapon skills. Having more than 5 different types of weapon skills is a pet peeve of mine.
I dunno. I wouldn't pay full price for this game, but 5 bucks on D2D might be acceptable... then again, I might just spend the money on a shorter game that I will enjoy more.
