I've been playing Civ IV for years, and one thing that has always bothered me is the Three Gorges Dam World Wonder and I've even searched the wiki but can't find any explanation.

IIRC, in previous versions, it was the Hoover Dam Wonder, and it provided clean power. The Civlopedia and wiki both claim the Three Gorges Dam does as well, but as soon as I build it, I see +2 sickness (or pollution) in every city it provides power too. In fact, this appears to be no better than a coal plant after building all of the available pollution fighting buildings (Public Transportation and Recycling Center as examples).

Can anyone explain why this discrepancy?

This "feature" was added in the Beyond the Sword expansion. Since then, electric power causes two points of unhealth regardless of the source. Coal plants cause an additional two points, for a total of four.

It does kind of make the Three Gorges Dam wonder suck, though it can still be worthwhile on large continents.

And the recycling center removes the "extra" two that the coal plant causes, making the coal plant and power from the Three Gorges Dam equal in pollution, which doesn't make any sense to me.

Thank you for explaining, I wasn't aware that it was added with the BtS expansion. I don't think I like this "feature" though. LOL Anyway, thanks again.
