I've had a basic Curse.com account for years now.

As far as I know, they began life as a support site for World of Warcraft which is how I became aware of them. They host add-ons for WoW (and now other games I guess). The reason I went there like many WoW users was their client makes it very easy to download, install and keep WoW add-ons up to date. I still use it for this.

I've noticed them branching out over time, supporting other games, etc. and didn't care personally but I still rely on them for my WoW add-on support which they do very well. The Curse client for WoW add-ons is available for Mac OS X by the way and I use that one. It doesn't cost me anything which is good because I'd download them manually if it did. It simply isn't something that provides enough value to pay for in my opinion but again, I just use it as mentioned above. It is great for that and they do get ad revenue from my page views when shopping for or checking on my own used add-ons so fair enough.

This reminded me to go update my WoW add-ons. The client still is the same simple client that just adds support for various MMO game add-ons. This thing is not like X-Fire or Steam or something. It's much simpler but very useful for the games it supports.

nansounet: Desura? :p
I thnk it would be great og GOG and Desura somehow link with each other to make able games purchased on one to be redeemable on other. That would be even able to solve "no linux builds" problem, since Desura have a lot of them for game sold on GOG.
Oh, and as far as page views on their websites, they report over a BILLION page views a month spread across all sites.

That is a massive internet presence.

http://www.al.com/business/index.ssf/2013/06/curse_1_of_worlds_largest_vide.html#/0

Compare that to The Yogscast, for instance. They have over 2 billion video views (page views) over a 3 year period and they are one of the top most viewed YouTube channels. On YouTube alone, without any of the other things they do, they make around 5 million dollars a year in advertising revenue just for their one BlueXephos channel.

Compared to them, Curse has over a billion page views a month - with advertising on the sites they run advertising on (not all sites and pages have advertising), that is an enormous amount of money. Add in subscription fees for their Curse service, YouTube revenue from the gamers they partner with etc etc etc., and there's a reason they're bigger than GOG :)

G-Doc: We're giving away free games. Many GOG.com users are already Curse.com premium subscribers. This is their cue to claim the game we have in store for them. Does that seem like a good enough reason for a frontpage post? It would certainly seem so to me.
Happy New Year, G-Doc!

If I'm not crossing any lines, how do you (you as in GOG, not necessarily you personally) how do you know that the number of GOG users that are also Curse.com premium subscribers falls is "many"?
Now that I think about it, how do you even know if any GOG users are also Curse.com premium subscribers?

ucfalumknight: I find it odd that Curse has nothing at all abort GoG on their front page.
They announced it almost 2 weeks ago.

Maybe gog stands for "good old news" now?

Seems like just a marketing ploy for both parties

Curse could have gone the route of offering free steam keys but instead they chose gog keys which will encourage their base to at least check out gog.com and gog will surely get some new customers. In spite of their popularity as this site demonstrates their are people who haven't heard about them. So they are alerting both of their bases about each other's respective business, and they both get something out of it. Curse more upgraders and gog more publicity, seems fair.

How this will benefit the community, well the more users who join and buy from gog the better gog's negotiation clout will be when it comes to bringing more games here. This is a good thing

LOL, maybe - although that would be GON wouldn't it? :)

Good Old GameNews - there ya go :)
I don't like that Chase processes Curse's payments and I've got no use for their subscription "service." I suppose I could see paying a fee for one month if it amounted to a discount on a game I wanted, but nah, seems too much like a trap.

...but if I understand what Curse does correctly, it just offers mod management and external save backup Steam's client does for free automatically anyway - so Steam and Curse would seem to be competitors in a sense (?).

Anyway, some partnership with some site is BETTER news, then another "games A, B and C is removed from GOG to stop annoy Steam"

Gog, what have you been doing.? While curse is a common word in the wishlist, it's usually found in titles such as "Curse of Monkey island", "Al Quadim : the genie's curse" or "Curse of the azure bonds"....

At first I was kinda unsure, but thinking about it I feel this will be good in the long run.

Curse covers a lot of well known games, so the exposure for GOG will help bring in new customers.

Besides its not like they are partnering with a steam key reseller or something.

One of the more sensible and less dumbed up comments I've seen here. I'm with you.
