I see this as a detrimental thing for GoG, though I'm sure Curse will profit from it greatly. I've watched Curse since it started as a small guild website for WoW to what it is now, and they've gone through a lot of changes that have not been for the better for the user of the website. Those same changes have been excellent, though, for their advertisers and the owners, I'm sure.

I was sad to see Fallout leave the catalogue. This move, by comparison, fills me with remorse and a bit of disgust.

GoG, you say you recommend Curse's services... which one? What is it you think is so great about them? Your post doesn't say *anything* about them other than the fact that they grow.

Please make this a limited time thing and then you cast them adrift to see in the Internet's toxic wasteland.
WTF???????

GoG scared me....WTF there thinking??????

G-Doc: Uh-oh. Judging from those comments Curse.com comes across as the Big Bad Wolf to some gamers. Don't worry guys! This is our way of doing something nice for a large community of people that may not know GOG.com yet, and maybe gaining some new users in the process. Nothing to be alarmed, and no one is going to huff and puff at anyone else.
I personally don't have a problem with it. I just never heard of Curse before, and can't think of a use for an account yet either. But I have nothing against it, this is another nice thing you guys are doing for the community, and I think more people should appreciate it.

EDIT: And what on earth is wrong with endorsing other businesses?

Shaolin_sKunk: You remember something called "curse".... being a bad thing?
Lol, I do specifically mean curse.com, I used it for my World of Warcraft modding at the time, however I think they were related to (or bought by?) either gold selling or hack related sites at the time. I remember something to that extent at least.

For GOG this is going to be good advertisement of course, they get a lot of traffic. I do find it slightly ironic since they mostly cater to MMO's which have basically the ultimate DRM on it :)

I still don't get what the site is about... it looks like a news site for online games that happens to host a mod-manager client. I guess that's a good thing for some people?

Fenixp: They do? Huh, I've never even heard of the site. My ignorance doesn't mean they're not popular of course.
I know about them because I read two of their other websites several times a day - Gamepedia and Minecraft Forum (I'm currently addicted to Minecraft :). They also have a popular YouTube channel, where they're making boatloads of money from advertising.

IMO, Curse is a pretty useless site for me as I don't play usually play games with mods or add-ons, but they are one of the top 5,000 websites in the US, and Gamepedia and Minecraft Forums are hugely successful as well - Minecraft Forums is one of the top 1,500 websites in the world and that means HUGE amounts of money from advertising.

If I remember correctly, they were named as one of the fastest growing companies a year or two back, and they seem to have gotten even bigger since then.

If this is squarely aimed at them, not us, then why even advertise it on the front-page like this as if this were something we should care about? We obviously already are familiar with GOG, this just makes it seem like you're trying to get us on Curse -- paid advertising -- and leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Lafazar: Frankly the whole thing comes off as nothing more than paid advertising and is leaving me with a really bad aftertaste.
avatar
Fenixp: You know GOG -is- a business
Of course, and more power to them for all their successes.

But I trusted this business not to post straight up advertisements in their front page updates. Now I don't.

So GOG gets some money from curse and loses some trust from stuck up people like me, which is a fair business transaction. :-P
Just bring more games, ok, GOG? Especially the classic ones. Please.

It was not GoG,s fault that the Fallout games left the catalogue so you shoud place the blame where it belongs and not on GoG.
Just saying.

Come on folks what's with all the doom and gloom?
Someone buys a PREMIUM account.
They get a GOG key and have to sign up here to redeem it.
While they're here they look around.
And maybe buy something.
End of story, and a good one.

I don't like curse sites and their so-called curse network. They have a bad history of malware problems and, in general, they promote and support quite the opposite business practices than GOG (DRM etc.).

GOG probably wants their money but this is nothing to brag about, IMO.
I don't know what this site does either even after having read their "About Us" found in tiny print that blends with the background on the bottom of the page. Something to do with hosting e-sports tournaments?

In my mind I'd like to think of this as a roundabout way of getting a middleman who could convince Blizzard to release the older games in their catalog they no longer sell on GOG. Diablo 1, Warcraft 1 & 2, maybe even Blackthorne perhaps? But maybe that's just me dreaming. :\

donsanderson: Come on folks what's with all the doom and gloom?
It's not "doom and gloom," it's honest confusion; are we, the already-paying members of GOG, supposed to gain something from this partnership or to pick up the premium membership or what? Or are the folks at GOG merely announcing that they're doing this sort of a partnership and it has absolutely nothing to do with us?

If it's the latter then they need to hire a better PR-person who can form a coherent announcement. Like, you know, saying "In our current efforts to gain more members we are announcing a partnership with Curse.com, giving promotional games on GOG.com to premium membership - owning users on Curse.com. If you are already a member of ours this announcement should only serve as an informational insight on what we're doing at the moment." -- notice the difference? All confusion dispelled instantly.
