90% of GOG.com games officially supported in Windows 8

A lot of you have been asking recently if we’re going to support Windows 8 officially. Our answer has been, “let’s wait for the release of the OS and we’ll look into it and see.” Well, Windows 8 has been out for a while, and as such we’ve had time to look into it. We have good news, and we bet you’re never gonna guess what it is!

Windows 8 support? Oh. Wow. Yeah. Good guess. How did you--wow. That was a good guess.

So as of today we're adding official Windows 8 support for most of the games in GOG.com catalog. There are currently 431 titles fixed, tested, and reported to be working properly under Microsoft's new OS. Note that most of these have not had the master builds updated, so you shouldn’t need to redownload the installer or anything. Some of the titles, our build ninjas performed their usual magic on, and they’ll work now in Windows 8--and we’re even adding Windows 7 support to a few. We’ll also be adding more Windows 8 games as time goes by and we’ve got time to apply some fixes to more of the classic games in the catalog.

We’re bringing the best games in history to the new OS, If you’ve got any questions about it, let us know in the comments below.

TheEnigmaticT: I'll see about getting one of them to post which games were updated; generally, though, i'd suggest this: if it's not working in Win8, try re-downloading it. :P
How extensive was the testing? Gothic II is listed as compatible on the store page but the installer has not been updated to fix the problem this game has with Windows 8. I know you're not one of GOG's tech guys, but hopefully you could forward the following to someone who is. :)

On Windows 8 Gothic II (and Gothic) shows a window border when in fullscreen mode (see attachment--the white area is a window border). This is fixed by applying the ForceSimpleWindow compatibility fix (as demonstrated by my patch).

Good news, though I have already ran a few GOG releases in my Win8 machine with no problem :)

However, the GOG website itself is the one place that I have noticed a problem - it is not possible to rearrange your games (in manual sorting mode) in the default Windows 8 browser, IE 10 (at least in metro mode). To rearrange my shelf, I have to switch to a desktop browser to do the job.

SLP2000: Jagged Alliance 2
Wat?

JA2 1.13 runs just fine on my win7 machine.
Xcelent!!!!!
Very nice to see you guys also update those few games that were indeed (almost entirely) working in 7 but weren't officially supported - i.e. Red Baron. Cheers!

Hopefully the updates will continue to be smooth!

Barry_Woodward: Speaking of Microsoft, vote for their games on the wishlist:
Come on people why the negative votes on that post. Sure you may hate microsoft, but remember there are some good games that came out of their game studios why not want to liberate a few.
Hell if you don't want games from publishers you don't like GOG would only have half as many titles, there are some shitty publishers out there.
Just vote the the good games and settle for that, and let those who want the games DRM free here have a chance.

Negative voting the comment so no one sees it is a dick move in my opinion, there was nothing offensive or objectionable, just your own MS hate. Look I hate MS as much as the next guy, but I'd rather have their games out here than not. Why spoil it for others.

Thanks for the continued support. So far, all of my GoG games have worked perfectly fine in Windows8 Pro. Just a few days back, I installed Gabriel Knight 1 (GoG version for the first time on any OS) and was surprised to find it running so well compared to the last time when I used retail CD version, and could only made it work after several tweaks to DOSBox.conf (Core type and CPU cycles) and even then the audio crackled continuously. Installing the GoG version on Windows8 was a completely hassle-free process.

Thanks again for providing the best PC games download store.
Why is it that some games that are compatible with Windows 8 aren't compatible with Windows 7 (e.g. Cannon Fodder)? I thought Windows 8 was basically just 7 with a shell on top.

No, the core of Windows 8 is pretty much all new, from what I've read about it. It's not just a case of the Modern (nee Metro) UI tiles stuck on top of Windows 7.

Hmm, if that's the case, i'd like to know what differences in performance for example there is between windows 7 and 8.

In my experience with pretty much any hardware above the Pentium 3 class seems to run better on windows 8 than windows 7 or Vista. This includes performance in pretty much everything; games, video editing software, and excessive web browsing windows/tabs.

However I find the interface to be a shit sundae on top of poo-poo pancakes. Fortunately there is a magical program called Classic Shell. It's Free and you can make windows 8's GUI look like windows 2000! Now if only it ran 16 bit programs in 64bit mode!

Actually, W8 still shares the same core as Vista and W7. Which is why drivers for W7 can work in W8.
Good to know, in case I ever upgrade to Windows 8. I still have yet to try it for myself.
I will keep using windows xp like forever. windows xp is the best OS in the history of mankind. ;)
