Fenixp: There's a ton of recommendation threads for Japanese anime, so don't suggest those - I've even seen tons of them. I'm now asking about western-ish stuff.
Wall-E
The Iron Giant
Samurai Jack
The Brave Little Toaset.
Batman The Animated Series.
Batman Beyond
Batman Under the Red Hood.
Watership Down
The Amazing Spider-Man (90s)
Secret of NIHM

Elmofongo: Titan A.E.

Fenixp: Oh yeah, I was kinda hoping someone will mention that. My friend was talking about it in relation to FAKK 2 ages ago and I forgot it's name. Thanks for that.
Does Disney count aswell, because I strongly recommend Fantasia and Fantasia 2000.

Let me guess because it was too emo and depressing and confusing?

Confusing, not so much, depressing ... Eh, I couldn't care less, because I hated pretty much all protagonists. Storyline was decent, that I give to the show, but dear god STOP CRYING ALREADY. Also, on many occasions, actions of those characters were utterly illogical and didn't quite make sense - even moreso than in your usual anime. I can't give you more concrete examples tho, there's no way I'm going to rewatch bits of it to find them.

Well thats one of the things is that its also in the Psycological Horror side, but if you did not like this they are currently making 4 movies to make the series more accessible called Rebuild of Evangelion, 2 are already out right now.

It's not as bad as in that respect as Claymore. Raki, the one boy who follows Clare around, cries in every single episode.

Fenixp: So... Can you recommend me an animated series / movie with darker, more serious themes?
A few I can think of that cover serious themes that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

When the Wind Blows - British animated film covering the daily life of a retired couple trying to survive World War 3.

Persepolis - French film (English dub available) follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution.

Animal Farm - 1954 British animated film, reflects events leading up to and during the Stalin era before the Second World War using animals on a farm.

Rock and Rule.

Has some rough spots but it's a fun movie to watch.
I'd like to recommend a couple of underrated series for those who can speak French (they haven't been translated in English, sadly).

- Belphégor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hcj7bex7rv4&feature=plcp): An animated series about a mysterious criminal mastermind in Paris. Really dark (and even scary at times). Awesome villain protagonist (that voice...).
- Argaï: The Prophecy (OK. It has been translated in English, but there are no videos on the web) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7JA37A6Ilk): A great high-fantasy series featuring time travel that deserved to be more known.
- Chris Colorado (This one HAS an English version on Youtube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_FBySdhq8A&feature=relmfu) A series with a post-apocalyptic setting and a very complicated plot (you pretty much have to watch every episode to understand anything. You can't skip any without getting lost). Darker than most animated series I've seen.

When it comes to movies, I'd recomment "Le roi et l'oiseau" (The King and the Mockingbird. There's a subtitled version on Youtube).

And I can't believe my favorite animated movie hasn't been mentioned: The Last Unicorn.

Theta_Sigma: Glad to meet fellow fans of the Maxx. Yeah, without spoiling the OP I love the dark themes present both in the series and the original comic. They really didn't censor anything for the TV adaptation and I love them for that. Sad story, but so, so good.

The head was real hit and miss for me. Yeah I liked it at times, but at other times it felt like it was just being creepy for creepy-s sake only. I had almost put it, but opted not to. But, all that being said, I can see why you'd find it good, it did have it's moments (even for me).

I'm sure you can still find links to it, either on YouTube or otherwise, and I'm pretty sure there were at the very least DVD cuts of the series. All of the MTV Freakshow block for that matter.

I am also glad to meet another fan of NIMH (it's a shame the sequel sucks) and the original animated Tolkien productions, I loved the animation and how well they kept the story together despite the considerable lack of time vs the Peter Jackson adaptations.

hedwards: I remember I used to stay up late watching that series. I never did get into Aeon Flux though, not sure why.

IIRC that was the general time frame when MTV was still airing The State as well. Not a cartoon, but brilliant nonetheless. It's not surprising that most of the cast has gone on to do other work.

As far as cartoons go. I loved The Critic, same producer as the Simpsons, definitely deserved a longer run. Ren and Stimpy, has some of the best animation of anything in the last 30 years. Well, the first couple seasons before they ditched Spumco anyways.

Oh yeah, Sea Lab 2021 and Venture Brothers. IIRC Sea Lab 2021 pretty much just reused already created footage from Sea Lab 2020, but brilliant nonetheless.

I could make an extremely long list of bad cartoons.

EDIT: Inspector Gadget is a lot of fun.
Yeah, Aeon Flux was a real, love it or hate it show. It really did polarize people I found. Totally understandable however. I liked The Critic as well, Jay Sherman was a great character, and Jon Lovitz was hilarious as him. Yeah I believe that was Sam Simon that did The Critic, but I could be mistaken. Ren & Stimpy was great, I loved watching it growing up and my friend used to have tapes and tapes of the show. I had the pleasure of meeting Billy West at FanExpo, very awesome guy. I never realized it but he based Stimpy off of Larry from the Three Stooges.

I never could get into Sea Lab, but I love the Venture Brothers. Patrick Warburton voicing Brock is one of my favourite parts, his voice is perfect for the role.

I loved Inspector Gadget as well, I miss Don Adams though. His voice MADE the Gadget so memorable for me, because I also grew up watching Get Smart. I still have most of the series' run on VHS somewhere in one of my closets. I should dig them out and re-watch them unless I can find the series on DVD/Blu-ray. I'd take either just to have copies that are a little more long lasting.
