I really like MMORPG's but... In my opinion 2(.5)D MMORPG's are more fun that 3D ones. I don't like the "Everybody is playing it and no matter what you look like ingame of what you achieve 929042384329 other people have already done it before you" And I know there are A LOT of crappy 2(.5) MMORPG’s out there! I could list 20 of them with ease.
The reason why I like 2D MMORPG's more is that they feel like more adult people are playing them and more specific people. I mean, why would a 'normal' person or a kid ( No Offense to kids by the way. ) choose DragonRaja or Legend of Mir 3 over World of Warcraft? ( Two of my favorites by the way. )
My all time favorite MMORPG is TalesWeaver, an Korean MMORPG that has never been released overseas. It may look like a kiddy game but trust it's not!

Well, I don't like MMOrpgs, or at least, I've yet to find one I do like.
I do prefer 2D over 3D though. Especially in the 'adventure' genre. I also play text adventure games and rouge-likes in text mode (not tile-set). I don't have a good imagination, but I also don't need anything fancy.

I'm just getting into the RPG genre, but in general I prefer the 2D over the 3D.
With RPGs, with RTS, with TBS and with adventures.
It might be just me, but to me it looks like the 2D games in general offer better gameplay and give you a better oversight.

Have you guys tried Pardus?
2D sci-fi MMOBRPG. Almost as classy a community as here (well TBH, it gets a little 5-year old pissy at times recently); Action Points-based play, so you don't really need to devote all day to playing it to get anywhere; and lots to do!
There's no quests or anything, but the universe is pretty large, and probably will keep expanding over time. Lots of critters to skill on, or die to :P. Sixteen clusters, containing many sectors are available for all, (three for each faction, seven neutral, and three-mini clusters containing 5-6 sectors and a neutral core sector for Premium pilots.
There's Player-pirates, life-traders, life-skillers, life-fighters. Three factions to rank up in for better equipment/ships. Many alliances ranging from single guys, to many dozens. Most will help you learn what to do, some will help you develop into what you want.
Two universes for free-play (Orion and Artemis) and a premium-only universe (Pegasus).

Living in HK a lot of these MMOs are localized here, like Maple Story and a ton of games that I've never even heard of. Personally I think it's nuts to like these more than 3D ones because I find that these 2D MMOs lack depth that 3D can provide.

Everytime I see some 16 year old playing this in a Internet Cafe, I feel like punching the wall. Fucking young punks and their rowdy screaming and yelling.

Yeah, I see that here all the time. Come on, it's only 800 MB, surely you can play the stupid game at home or something!

Can't comment on MMOs as I don't play them, but for most RPGs I've discovered that I much prefer 3d.
I think it's because I can get a much better feel of freedom and exploration from 3d worlds. Walking around a 3d world feels like being in another place, and I can look in any direction, and move around freely. Want to look at the underside of a table? Ok.
2d rpgs tend to feel much less involving and more distant to me. Instead of BEING in the world, i'm just clicking on a picture and moving a little figure around. It feels much more like playing a game, and less like being there.
Of course there are some exceptions, and particularly with very basic 2d presentations it sometimes means your brain fills in the blanks a lot. i found that with the early RPGs back in the day. But these days I just don't find them as involving.
This doesn't mean I don't like 2d for some other genres though, or that there aren't a few totally awesome 2d games out there.

only persistant-world multiplayer games i've ever enjoyed were text based... Dragonrealms ftw. The one crucial element of online games that 3-d, 2-d, or otherwise picture based interaction games have been unable to capture is interaction. Talking, waving, interacting, is 10000x richer in text than in picture, which is probably why I'm not a huge fan of MMORGOFSGFKskfsomethings... Empty leveling is pointless for me, i would rather just play single player.

I think we're talking first person perspective versus third person/overhead perspective here, right? Rather than sprite-based animation, which probably nobody does anymore, versus 3d models? If so ...
I like 2d much more, in general. The graphics tend to be brighter and more detailed, for one thing,and that increases my sense of immersion at least as much as a first-person perspective does. The color palette is toned down to dismal and blecch in so many shooters and MMORPG's that it looks weird and somehow even more fake than we already know a video game is.
Also, the dismal blecch makes me feel less excited about a game in general. A game should have something visually interesting about its world. Aristotle called it spectacle, in relationship to drama. A heightened sense of reality of some sort makes a world more appealing and grabs my interest better. The washed out yellows and browns of many shooters don't do that.
We used to have to make do with rapidly fading horizons, too, but generally games aren't that far from present day technology anymore where they have to do that.
However, 2D eliminates that problem entirely. You can see a bright or at least vibrant world, and more than three feet in front of you. You can even see yourself in it.

For me it's not really about 1st person vs 3rd person. Though i do feel that having the ability to more the camera and look around (in either) gives me more immersion than a fixed isometric view.
For example, I love the 3d bioware games, and the worlds they create seem very real and immersive. But the 2d black isle games so far haven't grabbed me at all. A lot of the basic mechanics are the same between the games, and even some of the characters and story style, but in the 3d games I feel like I'm in a world, in the 2d games I feel very detached and the world doesn't feel real.. it feels like a game.
That's probably just me though...

So people, 2D ( Hand drawn. ) adventure vs 3D adventure? And for the easiest comparison; Broken Sword 1/2 VS 3. In my opinion, no matter how high end a 3D adventure looks, it can NEVER match a 2D hand drawn game!

I don't think comparing the first 3D installment of a series to the previous 2D ones is fair. When a series switches to 3D, the results are usually terrible, and historically, the switch to 3D has been done much too soon. Case in point: Simon The Sorcerer 3D. Comparing it to StS2 would be terribly unfair as an example of which perspective is better.

To elaborate a little more, the main reason I'd like some 1st person adventure games is that there aren't many of them, so it'd make a nice change. 2d or 2.5d works pretty well for adventure games, but its pretty much all we've had since the genre began.
Though I guess myst was a 1st person puzzle game, kind of.
