I held on to yahoo a long time but I can't imagine using anything but google now. I haven't even tried Bing, mostly because MS, while not evil, is not a company I like supporting if I don't need to.
It kind of is a shame there aren't more alternatives.

Considering the first site they offer me, I'm suspecting a conspiracy by google ;-)

When I need a google search I use http://www.startpage.com
For most searches I switch between them and duckduckgo. I try to avoid google when possible, I don't trust them either

But I still use it. A lot. It didn't get its market dominance for being a bad search engine and I still remember how I loved it the day I discovered it.
That is also the problem. I can't find an alternative that I actually like enough to get me of google for good.
I'm currently using DuckDuckGo, as it has been recommended to be by a friend. Are there any other, maybe better alternatives I should try?
And yes, Elenarie, I tried Bing. I don't like it. ;-P
Back in the day I figured it was all going to be Yahoo forever. Now a days Yahoo is just good for pulling up nefarious sites.

I also switched to Startpage, which uses anonymized Google results. If you don't want Google results at all, Ixquick is from the same company.
Honestly, it's still not quite as good as Google, but it is good enough most of the time - if I really don't find something, I still use Google, but I tend to avoid it.
I also don't know if it's Startpage in general, or just because I use Opera, but the Image search is kinda buggy.
If you want to avoid other Google services, OpenStreetMap is a pretty damn good alternative to Google Maps, thanks to it's decentralized Wiki-approach

I don't know if it has improved, but I personally stopped using it one or two years ago when I noticed that even simple things that were easily to be found with Google, gave quite useless links in Yahoo. So their database or search engine wasn't simply up to par with Google.
Before that Yahoo was always my default search page for many many years, it was even my starting page on my old PC.
Also, I find Yahoo's starting page messy, maybe there is some lightweight version of it. I prefer Google's simple lightweight design.

Definitely startpage. Ixquick is good as well to get a broader search but it's more of a last resort.

Duckduckgo is probably the best alternative out there. If you don't like Bing, Google or Yahoo I think your options are rather limited. At least as far as good options go...

Anyone knows the difference between duckduckgo and startpage when it comes to privacy?
