Elmofongo: And GOG has plenty but I don't know which to pick. The only one that sparked my interest is the upcoming Primordia.
Can't you wait just one more day? After you've played Primordia, tell us about your experience, what you liked about it and what you didn't like, and then ask here for recommendations again. ;)
There are a lot amazing point and click adventure games. And I can recommend those:

1) Monkey Island series
2) Neverhood
3) Syberia series
4) Black Mirror, but recommend you only the first episode of these horror/thriller game (unfortunately i am not sure if is in english, because this game developed in czech)
5) Broken sword series
6) Indiana Jones and The fate of Atlantis

This is really very short list and still if you will play all, you have couple month what to do ;)
The first Gabriel Knight would be good for a starter, I think.

If you want cartoon-like adventure games with snappy dialogue a la Grim Fandango, then Telltale Games' titles are supposed to be pretty good for that (Sam and Max series, Wallace and Grommit, Back to the Future, etc.) Haven't gotten around to playing them myself yet, though. Watch a trailer for a Sam and Max title and see if it appeals to you.
I had never played any adventure games myself until recently. I just finished Gemini rue and Resonance and very much enjoyed my time with them.
heres some questions that might help...
what setting appeals to you, sci-fi, fantasy, realistic, cartoony?
Would you prefer a game that has a serious or comedic tone?
When it comes to puzzles, do you like the idea of collecting lots of items and trying them on everything? Do you want lots of dialogue puzzles where you interview lots of characters to advance or would you be happy with a game that has minimal talking and focuses on things like lever puzzles and atmosphere? Are you looking for puzzles that are more action driven and time sensitive or more traditional not-hybrids?
Is there one perspective style that appeals to you more? (1st or 3rd person)

I highly recommend the longest journey series! The first game was much better imo. The second game was a bit of a let down in difficulty and the broken combat system (not much combat in game, like maybe 3 fights in all, but the combat system was still terrible :( ).

I hear people praise the Syberia series too though personally I found it dull.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of our Fathers

Black Mirror series (I hear 2 and 3 are much better than the first). Can be gotten off Amazon and afaik it's DRM free.
gabriel knight sins of father and longest journey ,,, also telltale ones, new sam and max this episode is free, so you may want to try it

and also walking dead, not really a puzzle game but a adventure non the less
Blackwell
Simon th Sorcerer 1+2, both games are really funny, on par with Lucasarts games.

The longest journey, great story, but also lots of talking.
Curse of Monkey Island is my favorite of all time. It's not sold anywhere so just download it and run it in Scumm. Amazing game with pretty art that holds up well today.

Also Beneath a Steel Sky is a good suggestion and free on GOG, but it can be a little corny and takes itself a little too seriously at times. Also, not as pretty.
Just wish GOG would hurry up and get the PC/Mac Leisure Suit Larry adventure games on here so i could recommend the underrated Leisure Suit Larry 3, never had more fun back in the day playing that.
If you want something new and funnny I would recommend Deponia

Lots of great recommendations in here.

One overlooked adventure is Scratches. It's very Lovecraftian, if you like that kind of horror and atmosphere.

Also, the Myst series is a must.
Don't miss Full Throttle!

Edit: also: Discworld.
