NOW HEAR THIS:

Fellow GOGlodytes,

Six months ago we set up a temporary giveaway to fill the void left by the departure of various regular gifters on this forum, and to honour both them and other missing GOGlodytes. As time has passed, it has become apparent that this giveaway is no longer temporary, but a more permanent fixture.

Entry is simple: state that you're entering. A $10 game of your choice if you win.

On our behalf (and to maintain anonimity), Sachys has agreed to host and manage the giveaway process.

Post to be entered. Our identities are not to be revealed by the winners - or else their future entries will be refused.

Kind Regards,
The Sigil

ADDITIONAL:

This is a simple lottery - one person, one entry. Entries for anyone other than yourself and your own personal gaming enjoyment will not be counted.
All entrants must have an avatar and something other than "new user" as their "forum title".
The title can be changed , and the avatar [url=https://secure.gog.com/account/settings]HERE.
Entries not adhering to these requirements will not qualify.

YOU MAY RETURN TO YOUR GOGLODATION!

ENTRIES CLOSE 7PM GMT WEDNESDAY MAY 28th

...and from me guys: if you could please refrain from bumping the thread, it would be a great help as it makes keeping tally and checking for double entries a little difficult.

For additional fun and participation this week (does not affect your entry)...

Sequels, reboots and remakes - are any ever better than the original?
I'm in, thanks!

Question: the +1 thing means to rate the post right?

Remake: Resident Evil (NGC) > Resident Evil (PSX)

I'll try my luck again, I guess. :P

I'm in! Thanks Sachys and the SIGIL.

Often I find the sequel/reboot to be better or, at least, just as good as the original. As an example, Jetpack 2 is certainly a major improvement over the DOS game Jetpack, while staying true to the roots of the original. (judging from the time I've spent playing the online beta)

Good luck to everyone else!

In, thank you.

Are we just talking about games or anything? For movies or whatever it's uncommon to find superior sequels/remakes, but I think in games sequels can often be better because the mechanics are more refined and elaborate. I like Mario Bros. but Super Mario Bros. is quite a bit better. Same with Street Fighter 2 compared to the first one. I haven't played the later Assassins Creed games, but just about everyone seems to prefer the second one to the first, which I can easily imagine having just finished AC1 and finding it got pretty monotonous as it went along despite the neat setting.
Ding, I'm here! (I'm in)

Even if good products are good independently from their predecessors (just a bit overshadowed, at least), my overall opinion on these is the following:

- sequels -> they are often bad as they originate from an exploitation attempt.
- remakes -> they usually mean lack of originality, plus the previous issues.
- reboots -> the least favourite of mine.. let's just forget all the previous N (good) titles and start again with better graphic but still messy plot.. WTF

When the result is great, however, it's such a pleasure! : )

I'm in, thanks.

Talking about reboot, Thief was very disappointing. the game is all a "push X to grab stuff", the stealth section are...well, nice, but the game is ruined by backtracking, a poor story and boring general design.

This also apply to Prince of Persia, the one where you are immortal. Bland, boring, you do the same thing over and over.

I think a good remake is Castle of Illusion, very short game but funny and with a true art design on it.
I'm entering, thanks for the chance!

As for sequels, Monkey Island 2 and Terminator 2 are proof that they can be better than the originals.

True, but these (and few others) are exactly exceptions, if you consider the total of sequels\reboots\remakes.
im in as usual mr. chimp

as for the extra participation

sequels some are good (fallout, kotor) some are bad or atleast not as good as expected

reboots i see those just as another way for the publishers to milk the cutomer only coz theyve made it work a little better now and changed graphics, other games do that with patches

same goes for remakes

obviously i was only talking bout games there as for movies and music theres usually a few that hit the nerve quite well and some that totally fuck it up

edit: this is my oppinion and im not gonna change it for anyone :P

I'm gonna hurl this here sombrero into the ring.

Remakes are rarely an improvement, I can't think of many that have managed to keep the spirit of the game while modernising it. Similar with reboots, I don't think the modern games market are really geared up for it.

That is of course with the exception of BioShock Infinite, which I thought was truly amazing.
I'm in, +1

Sequels could defiantly be better than the original: Trine 2, The Witcher 2, Simon the Sorcerer 2, Monkey Island 2 etc. in fact quit often they allow the game makers to perfect the formula.
Thanks Sachys and The Sigil. I did like the Tomb Raider reboot though. The Baldur's Gate remake however hasn't convinced me fully (I've only read the reviews). So I have mixed feelings about it. Remakes without changing the essence of the game (just better graphics) are ok I think, but I don't like it when the content is changed in the process.
As for reboots, they can be good and bad!

Ah, almost forgot, I'm in :)
Thanks Sachys, thanks Sigil! Count me in

Yes. FO2 > FO1, FNV > FO3, BG2 > BG1, NWN2 > NWN1... the list goes on!
I'm in!

As for sequels, I would have to say Homeworld 2 really improved its graphics compared to the first game. Flatout 2 was a massive improvement over the first game in terms of gameplay and graphics.
Many thanks, Sachys and the Sigil, I'm in~ :D

Sequels, reboots and remakes - are any ever better than the original?

I liked Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (#3) just as much, or possibly more than the original... Hard to say, though, as Temple of Doom is such a classic! The sequels to Shanghai Noon and The Mummy (Brendan Frasier) are almost as good as the first movies. Not quite, but close! Those are the only ones I can think of offhand, though!

EDIT: Annnnd you meant games, of course. Wow. Blame it on my incredible fatigue!

The first games in the Mystery Stories and Hide and Secret series I wouldn't even try, but Mystery Stories 3: Mountains of Madness and Hide and Secret 4: The Lost World were incredibly good! I enjoyed them VERY much! For that matter, since I'm thinking casual games, the Mystery Case Files series has come a LONG way from Huntsville!
