No promo campaigns per se, but I was fond of some print ads during the PS1 era. Final Fantasy VII had the line "The first dream with open eyes" over a backdrop of Shinra, much like this ad.

Also, the ad Sony (I'm pretty sure it was a Sony one) ran for their line of PS1 controllers that featured Psalm 23:4 "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me." with a lineup of accessories in the back. I loved that one too. Sadly, can't find that either on the net /:

Insomnia Sales are terrible, because you wait several hours sometimes in front of your PC for nothing or just a single game (like me) !

I've got everything from my immediate wishlist, so no complaints here about the insomnia sale. No free games though :/. Although it is a bit tedious to constantly watch the offers, a dual monitor setup helps :D... As for what promos are nice, it's hard to tell. I loved the contest promos of GOG (crossword etc.), but also I usually take gladly most games for at least 75% off. Though I have a hard-limit of maximum $10 for a single game. I'm not willing to spend more than that. So for me at least, only a couple of marketing strategies work (like the current sales), where the discounts are almost irresistible.

This insomania sale has certainly been fun, at least for the first round! A lot of it is due to how quickly it took, so you can get to see all the 100 games in a respectable sitting. And it's exciting, enjoying the furor with other GOG-ers! Going by the Jack Keane stunt at the end, it does appear that GOG has a script set to artificially decrease the number of copies on sale at any given time.

Which makes me suspect a time-based element to the sale. Like, in the first round, the timers are set to go down quickly, if there weren't enough buyers. But for the 2nd and 3rd round, they are tuned to go down at a far slower rate. Say, if a game still couldn't sell in a full day, then they'd artificially move it along (at a natural rate), to get the next game going.
