Does The Great Battles Collector's Edition really need 1gb of ram on your video card?
Am I reading that right or or is it a typo?

The sale is all or nothing but I don't like to buy games I can't run. I know it's silly because
it's dirt cheap but I have to draw the line somewhere or I'll just buy everything. :)

Don't forget this if you're having doubts. That's the reason GOG implemented it in the first place.

Those games used to work on systems without any hardware acceleration at all and also if the GOG version is using some wrappers to avoid visual glitches or crashes, there's no way those games would need anywhere near a GB of video memory. It's most definitely just another case of GOG being ridiculously careful when providing system requirements (those are probably the specs of the weakest system they have tested the games on).

I don't think "money back policy" works for a game that you bought but you don't meet its system requirements.

Couldn't it be a typo? I'm looking at the screenshots of the game and it seems like a game that should be able to run on really old cards to me. 1 GB video RAM should only be needed for quadruple-A games with movie quality graphics.

It's not the only game which have exorbitant system requirements here. For example check Colonization. One can argue about processor claiming that it involves DOSbox and yadda yadda yadda but 1GB HDD? Installer takes 49 MB while the game itself - 63 MB.
