Is this a typical space trader/shooter style game? Does it require a joystick? I'm jonesing for an "Elite" fix, but even after hours of patient effort, I was disappointed by X3. Is this one worth the ten bucks?

It's a third person, almost like an RTS game in terms of control. You don't need a joystick, you couldn't use one if you had it.
Though from the sound of it what you are looking for is Evochron Legends which is FREAKING AWESOME.
