KneeTheCap: Does anyone have any ideas why my card makes that "high pitched" noise at some games? I started KOTOR (for the first time, figured I should play it..) and the video card started to make the sound. Same thing was with Minecraft, but it was remedied by ticking the "limit framerate" box, so it might have something to do with that. Some intro videos also cause that..

So, ideas?

Kezardin: If you google 9800gt noise you'll find a lot of people having similar problems - usually traced back to the fan. It even gets some videos on Youtube such as this one and this one.

Yoiu could try cleaning the fan of any dust. Also Rivatuner may help you set the fan speed to limit noise.
No, the sound is not like those. Gosh, I just don't know how to explain it...much higher pitch than the fan sound, and not in sync with the fan. Like it's on its own or something...

Edit. Oh, and the sound goes away in some games when I increase the visual settings..

Keep checking your temps on the on screen display during games, you'll know if it's a temp issue or not. Also, enable v-sync in the nvidia control panel, the 200+ fps you MIGHT be getting in game menu screen overworks your card to breaking point.
Can this be used when I have smartdoctor running? I mean, do they get along? I have smartdoctor for GPU card and core temp for the processor...

And should I force the V-Sync on with the control panel? Is it a good thing? At the moment its "use the 3D application setting". My monitor uses the 60hz refresh rate..

You sure it's not the fan's noise? If the game is very demanding it might push the card to its limits and so the fan spins even faster.....*snip*

KneeTheCap: To be honest, I really don't know. But it only happens when I play "older" games. I think it has something to do with the framerate or something. And the sound is very different from the "fan is speeding up" one.. I don't know how to explain it. It just sounds different :)
It's still the fan, you're getting a secondary vibration or resonance (dunno exactly, I'm not a physicist) and it's making your screech.

Forcing v-sync is fine, if the game does not allow it. Once you start using precision, you'll know if the game menu's are v-synced or not, alternatively, you can always use D3Doverrider, whic is excellent.

I don't know if evga precision works with smartdoctor, try it out.

The only high pitched whine I've heard from my 9600 GT is coming from the fan. Cleaning it out with compressed air generally clears that up for a while.

With newer games (DA2, Mass 2 and such) it's not making the sound (it does increase the fan speed, but that's a different sound).
A high-pitched squealing noise when running at really high framerates (hundreds - or even thousands - of frames per second) is typically generated by surface-mounted inductors on the video card. The magnetic field generated by an inductor can cause slight movements in the wires the inductor is composed of. This makes the wires rub against each other, thus creating vibrations. Depending on the frequency of the current going through the inductor, the vibrations can be at an audible frequency.

This is a common issue, and the fix is - as you have already noticed - to simply not let the card run at such high framerates.
