We're really not slacking off today as it's the third news item today! And what's even better, this one announces a start of an early weekend promo [url=http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/would_you_like_to_see_the_weekend_promos_of_gog_on_thursday/post1](*wink *wink lackoo1111 ;)). So how about a 50% discount on all games from 1C Publishing, including King's Bounty: The Legend, UFO series, Star Wolves and more. During the promo you get 50% off on all games no matter how many of them you buy. But don't you wait until Monday, April 11 at 11:59 p.m. EDT, to take advantage of the offer as you can miss it!
The Space Rangers games look interesting... but how different are Space Rangers 1 & 2 from each other? What will I miss out on if I just get the second one?
I also have a question regarding Space Ranger 2.
I liked the freeform gameplay and truly living game world of SR1, but couldn't spend that much time with it because the need to juggle with my cargo capacity (if I load up a good amount of trade goods, I can't have a decent gun, meaning I can't really defend the ships fro pirates or the aliens) got on my nerves. Is this problem present in SR2 as well or is it easier to extend cargo capacity in that game?
(Or am I missing out on something in 1 which could solve my problem?)

It's a balance between Tech - Space - Money

Bigger and better stuff can come at a cost of two things, space or money. The more money you spend, the lighter you can get them.

In 2 at least, there's a bulletin board on the planets you can use to search for anything. You can specifiy how much you want something to weigh maximum etc.

It's simply a matter of finding the balance with what you need, and what you plan to do (trade = more cargo, pirate/fight = less cargo, better stuff), until you start making more money, tech gets better, or you happen to find some sweet stuff on the way (killing a few dominators can give some sweet alien tech sometimes ;))

There's also a couple of artifacts in black holes that can reduce weight significantly so certainly worth checking out.

Phc7006: Yet, I'm afraid that 1C in its latest titles sharply raised its DRM annoyance factor. They used to use securom, then switched to starforce and in Cliff of Dover went for the latest Tages gadget, including limited activation , this in addition to being hosted on steam.
This to say It's great to be able to enjoy their older games at a great price tag...
Update: IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover no longer uses Solidshield. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before, props to them for that.

Urrgh, I think paypal and my bank have a disagreement. Seems any transaction that required more than my paypal balance if failing so must be some interaction between my bank and paypal, my bank did have maintenance this weekend maybe they broke something. Managed to get one game sadly my paypal balance isn't enough to grab the other.

Thanks for the info.

I will delay my purchase though because there seems to be serious performance issues.

From what I read on Ubi's forums, users are quite unhappy. Prompting apologies from 1c on the 6th. And that f....g drm added to the injury : some felt that they needed to add ram and to try another GPU to get better performance and consequently ended up being denied playing because the activation limit was reached.

Now, seems they fear that this may compromise US sales. I suspect this is one of the or even the only reason for the DRM being removed that early.

But did they learn from that ? I very much doubt it. They wasted quite a lot of money on that, licencing that DRM.

I doubt it because its has a feeling of deja-vu : that type of blunder already happened to 1C. When they released the boxed French version of Theatre of war, they and their publisher managed to release it with a DRM that prevented the installation of the game on some (many) systems. DRM was subsequently removed by a patch.

And Ubi being Ubisoft...

hooston: sorry guys nothing here for me. have a look at your bestsellers and see what people really want.

Egotomb: As much as we would like that it doesn't make very sound business sense.
Yeah, and they have promos here every week. It's not like they could have a promo of the same ten topselling games every week... That would be kind of silly.

I don't think I'd like that kind of sale better anyway. The bestsellers, the most famous and arguably best games here, are the ones I have bought or am going to buy anyway. Six or ten dollars really isn't much for a great game, so I'll pay that for them if I'm interested.

These promos where games suddenly cost half of that (or sometimes even less) are great for introducing me to new games, those that I didn't know that I wanted. I've bought several games that I hadn't even heard of or really looked at before at the promos here, and often enough it's turned out that I love them.

And besides, every once in a while (and at special times, like the Christmas promos) there tends to actually be a sale even on those top sellers. So if six or ten dollars really is too much for you to pay for the best games, then you just have to be patient and wait for it.

Thanks for your time, I know about the mutual exclusion of good price, small space and good availability, but I still find it annoying that I have to sacrifice virtually all my cargo space so that I have equipment with which I stand at least a ghost of a chance against pirates. It's good to know SR2 has at least small tweaks to the system, though; I may bite and grab it while it's on promo (I still have to make up my mind about it).
so what is the point in the promo when nobody really wants the game that you are promoting

The point is what I just wrote? Some games are great, but go under the radar for most people. There are a few hundred games here and even though I've been a gamer for 20+ years now I'm not intimately familiar with them all.

For instance, I just bought Space Rangers. I've heard about it before, but wasn't familiar enough with it to go and seek it out. The promotion brought my attention to the game, prompting me to visit the store page and read about the game - it seemed like a nice game, and with the promotion it was cheap enough for me to take a chance on it.

See how that works? It's good for GOG - they get a sale they would probably not have gotten otherwise, and it's good for me because it gives me a game at a low price and I get to try something new. What would GOG gain by only having sales on the games that are already favorites? And what would I gain in the long run?

5.99 and 9.99 for the topsellers. You don't think that's a steal already?

And the other games were pretty popular, just not as popular as Planescape: Torment.
I give up, I guess I'll buy UFO: Aftermath next time it is on special. I can't seem to process any transactions from my bank account with gog, either through paypal or direct by credit card. My bank must have changed something in weekend upgrades. My credit card with another bank would take a few days to get funds into.

Surprising really that in this day and age it can still be hard to buy things online and takes so long to move funds between banks.

Probably for the best, I have too many games to play

If you have a pop-up blocker on the NoScript extension enabled, you could try disabling it. With some credit cards (my Capital One MC for instance) a pop-up appears for extra security verification.
