JohnWalrus: Thomas Bowdler made censored versions of Shakespeare's plays. That's right, the motherfucker censored Shakespeare! Pretty funny, considering nowadays Shakespeare seems tame compared to, I dunno, American Psycho :P

doccarnby: To be fair to him, he wanted to make it ok for children to read so they could appreciate him at an early age, and then read the uncensored texts as they grew older. Still a stupid idea.

As for my favourite censorship, I'd have to go with the network showings of Showgirls. Apparently it's about 30 minutes long and all the naked ladies have underwear painted on.
I supposed not as dastardly as, say, putting Naked Lunch on obscenity charges, but still a bad idea.

And my favorite TV censoring is of the Matrix. Instead of "Jesus Christ", he says "Judas Priest"...does that not disturb anyone else but me?

Agreed. And that "safe for children" thinking is behind the gutting of a lot of classic fairy tales, notably the works of the Brothers Grimm. Those tales were written dark and brutal for a reason.

Ha ha, but how great if they had also replaced the background music during the shootout with "You've Got Another Thing Coming"?
This thread belongs to Yumekui Merry. Too bad I cant imbed.

Maybe this doesn't fit into either category, but is censorship of a truly idiotic kind and was the first to come to mind :D

+1 I'm in!

The Brady Bunch shoked TV audiences when it showed the happily married parents getting ready to sleep in the same bed. What I found even more disturbing is that the idea of sex and violence on TV became accepted decades before flatulance. The Brady family broke the sex barrier almost 40 years before the first prime time fart was allowed on The Drew Carey Show.
Thanks for the interesting giveaway, Telika!

This bill in the US state of Arizona was pretty funny last year. They wanted to essentially outlaw trolling or annoying other people on the web:

"It is unlawful for any person, with intent to terrify, intimidate, threaten, harass, annoy or offend, to use any electronic or digital device and use any obscene, lewd or profane language or suggest any lewd or lascivious act, or threaten to inflict physical harm to the person or property of any person. It is also unlawful to otherwise disturb by repeated anonymous electronic or digital communications the peace, quiet or right of privacy of any person at the place where the communications were received."

SirEyeball: I have a story about Struense from He became the de facto ruler in Denmark (there is a film out that was nominated for an Oscar about him called http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1276419/ A Royal affair.) He decided to lift the censorship on written publications in the name of enlightenment only to find that the majority of published material thereafter was satire about himself and the Queen so he had to enforce some sensorship again to ward it of. in Please +1
Hahah, that reminds me of Mao. His "Hundred Flowers" campaign (he loved campaigns) was started to allow the general public to comment on how Mao and the Communist Party were doing and to offer suggestions, etc. He was shocked at the amount of criticism, so he shut the campaign down and then had the people who spoke out arrested.

+1, I'm in. Some schools (mostly in rural US) have sex-ed classes but the teachers are not allowed to mention condoms, safe sex, etc. They are only allowed to teach abstinence.
No children in Fallout 2.
Invincible children in Fallout 3.
Won't somebody please think of the children?

I've put "giveaway". It's become a dirty word, lately.

(And thus, making this thread, I was totally aware of that it'll be filtered out by people who have installed a script to that effect. I savour the irony.)
