I really hope I don`t have to buy a new one :/ and this is just some sort of driver problem

Here`s what happened, during Saints Row 4 the rumble part started to freak out after every gunfight ingame, so I unplugged and replugged the controller ingame, which seemed to solve the problem. When I did this for the third time, the controller was no longer recognized, no light, nothing.
I returned to the desktop and here it`s the same problem: I hear the sound for plugged in usb device, the light goes on for one second on the pad and windows gives me the message: usb-device not recognized.

tried a different port
installed the driver new
unplugged and plugged 20 times
rebooted my pc

still nothing

Had anyone ever the same or a similar problem?
I haven't had that problem with a xbox controller, though I did have a similar problem where an older gamepad wouldn't be recognized by windows; but that seemed to be tied to a windows SP update rather than anything to do with the gamepad. I changed to using a new logitech one though and haven't had any problems since, though my logitech doesn't have rumble features and for most games I turn that off it is an option.

Good luck with your issue though, have you tried using the xbox controller on a different PC or an xbox?

Yup. Saints Row IV as well - all controls reversed. It seems to be an SR4 issue only for me as the contrller is fine otherwise.
