I'll chime in and say that I did try Wolfendoom a couple of months ago.
I would play Wolf 3D first before doing Wolfendoom. The design of Wolfendoom is definitely great though, and well worth it. The remastered soundtrack is a joy to listen to IF you have experience with the original version because it references it so much.
Edit: I am not referring to Blade of Agony (though that one is great as well), I am referring to Brutal Wolfenstein 3D.
