How time flies by.... As a big gift for the anniverasry of the first Wipe Out, the designer has released the official game design document of this classic good old game, lots of interesting infos in it (didn't even know there was some kind of story):

You can download the pdf here:

If the link is down, then there is the facebook page:

Aside from that, what are your memories from back then?

Personnaly, I remember when we were too poor to buy the game so we played the official demo which was on cd provided by the official Playstation magazine. Funnily enough, I played more of "High-Octane" (a PC clone) than the original ^o^
I remember the game being ridiculously beautiful and smooth. Of course the first games, from what I recall, were from the era when 3D accelerated cards were just starting to become mainstream. So wipe out, though I don't know which one but it would've been 1996/1997, was definitely one of the first games I saw that ran on a separate gpu. What struct me most was the ridiculously smooth framerate. A couple of years later I could also join in on the fun with my 8mb Voodoo 2 :D

Also, kudos on the Hi-Octane mention! I played that endlessly at one point. It was quite the improvement on the original test drive :)
Wipe Out. A game that I was constantly seeing people play back in the day, but one that I never played to any serious extent (just messed around a bit with the original and one of the PSP releases). Nowadays, I still haven't given it any serious attention.
It's been so long already?

My fondest memory of it is really recent. Someone made a website where we could navigate the game's levels as we pleased. It was awesome, but I don't remember the link anymore.
Off Topic fact: that webpage name literally means "monkey cream".

Back on topic, this is so cool! Thanks for sharing.
It's longer than I expected.
Not a phrase I often use.
I got Wipeout 1 with the PS1 ; )
I liked the game, loved the music, but it was HARD and I was absolute s**t at it XD

Must have been WipEout XL/2097, the original WipEout was never 3D accellerated AFAIK.

The original Wipeout on PC was a DOS game, had no 3DFX support, and looked like utter ass.

Wipeout 2097 looked beautiful though.
Wow, this is a great find! I've always been a fan the Wipeout series ever since the PSX era. It's really a shame that Studio Liverpoo/Psygnosis doesn't exist anymore.

On the bright side, there is this new Wipeout-like game called SlipStream GX. The beta is currently out, but I don't know if the developers are still working on the game.

Thanks for sharing this one!

Had to start instantly the OST for it - the typical techno era

Btw. anyone in Bullfrogs "Hi-octane"? It was a clone of the origin wipeout
But I really liked this game, maybe because Hi octane was a little more forgiving at the diffculty level
and my PC in this times was able to render it in shiny svga the game was already out some time when i got mine
Additionally it had a great spliscreen mode.
