The game originally had LAN multi-player, what is the reason it was disabled?

I don't have the answer...

... I do wonder if this was a publisher demand for it coming to GOG DRM-free (in essence, "gimp" the DRM-free version to make it slightly less desirable).

There is a small thread in the Dungeon Siege forum about multiplayer
