How many times do I need to delete old savegames, from within the game itself no less, only for them to all be restored the next time I start the game up ?

cloud saves are nice, but if you're not going to actually sync my changes what is the point. I don't need to be sorting through 500 save games every time I want to load a save
Sounds like I am better off when I do not use Galaxy but then I have the hassle of doing my own backups.
Isn't the cache for (total) saves some hilariously small number?
I frankly prefer to manage\backup saves myself, there isn't enough control on such automatic sync.
Also, I'd hate to lose my saves due to some error.

Just stop using Galaxy. Use the offline installers and if you really want cloud saving, use something like a GameSave Manager together with some cloud storage like Dropbox.
Of course, the cloud save functionality in Galaxy should work well and be reliable and clearly inform the user on how to use it.
It's functional in general, but very aggravating when it isn't.

Pre/Post launch sync takes far too long, some games much longer than others.
Some games have very large saves, excessive bandwidth consumption and contribution to pre/post.
Sometimes sync won't work and you're stuck with an error. It makes pre/post launch that much longer and annoying. Workaround, kill galaxycommunications.exe.
Even if you disable sync it will still do a pre/post sync initialization, probably to see if sync is on, and then stop, but it still takes longer than it should.

Reminder the only purpose for an online backup is convenience.

Funny thing is, I don't launch my games through galaxy. But I keep it open and use it for mass downloads because it just makes queueing all the offline installers and extras way easier.

I never wanted to use Galaxy, but as soon as they started pushing it, they completely neglected and then abandoned their offline downloader tool. Routinely pissing users off by having to make us haraass them to update it to point at (or even list) the correct files, etc.

The longer GOG exists the more corporate they become, which is really weird when you consider how much F-U money they have, thanks to other revenue streams, like Valve. Guess they'd rather waste it on broken games with inflated budgets, instead of facilitating good user experiences and acquiring DRM versions of games we want to see

Yes, discontinuing the Downloader was a clear sign that GOG doesn't like their 'always optional' promise about Galaxy anymore. They want it to be mandatory without officially saying so.

But if you just need a downloader, you could try the Free Download Manager. It works well for me to download the offline backup installers. https://www.freedownloadmanager.org/
I don't use Galaxy. No Galaxy, no problem! :-)

If you want to use something dfferent to the offline installer why to use random external tools over the official ones? I have more faith in security under the GOG tools that using others. Not mentioning the overcomplication of things.

And about "optional" The old downloader was equaly optional than Galaxy. Any proper Galaxy user knows it. Your prejudices aside, of course.

yeah I don't need a download "manager", I want an official tool is updated properly, that works and just lets me batch download my library without manually selecting every file on every game, etc. So Galaxy is as close as we have right now.

Also worth note is I have "cloud saves" disabled in the Galaxy client, yet it still seems to be using them.. Wouldn't surprise me to find it bugs out on games that were already cloud saving or something if you disable it after the fact

Because GOG deprecated the official one.
