Here's an article: https://www.pcgamer.com/inside-the-next-indie-frontier-ps1-style-horror-games/
Whatever the explanation - I can't imagine that the "low budget aspect" isn't a big motivator for Indie developers.

If a game is good, I'll play it. I recently (last year) enjoyed Gabriel Knight 3, DESPITE the crappy 3D. Sure I can get that a modern low poly 3D game is made that way for the "art style", but I still prefer newer 3D.
(same thing for "pixel art" - I enjoyed the Wadget Eye games, but the flashback to the 90s isn't necessary for me)
I liked sacrifice
Eh, no thank you! A good thing there are mods that improve a lot of those nineties' graphics to a playable level.

Those early 3d games were so crap. Mortal Kombat when it became 3d omg that was horrible .
Guess I'm the opposite. I can appreciate professional level 2D pixel art, even if it is from 30 years ago.

"Professional level" 3D art even less than 20 years ago makes me cringe, however. I disliked it back then, and I still dislike it- especially when games tried to be "realistic". My favourite (aesthetically) 3D games from that period were ones that didn't try to ape realism- Grim Fandango and Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask come to mind.

Admittedly, it caused me to miss quite a few otherwise good games, and when I try them now, I can't help but require HD textures and remodel mods- Deus Ex, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Thief, etc.
One of the early 3D games that i adore, is Sub-Culture. First one to have 3dfx i think, too?

In consoles too; Castlevania Legacy of Darkness has to be one of my favorite games ever.
Couldn’t read that article, so much advertising and telemetrics the actual article was obscured.
I did enjoy the old ps1 back when. Even played RE1-3 on ps1 emulator recently and they are still cracking. Much better than 5-7. In terms of graphics, I don’t mind too much. Quite a lot of modern games have crap graphics, and more have fantastic graphics and yet are terrible games (wolcen springs to mind there). I played a few hours of breath of the wild some months back, emulated on pc, graphics on that looked totally crap. Bannerlord is what I currently playing, and other than a graphic update and couple of tweaks it’s warband. So just to focus on one aspect is a bit pointless.
Trying to sell ugly low poly games with low res textures for the sake of nostalgia is a bad idea.

Exactly , some games are still okay like heroes 3 or adventure games , but most just don't worth the time anymore.
Clunky games with vomit graphics+ resolution headache, why spend your time on them? There are many good game from the last decade which worth your time way more.

Don't get me wrong. Many actual early 3D games are still worth playing, like Thief and Quake. But those games are good despite their graphics. Nobody is nostalgic for PS1 era graphics.
I guess a part of it is who grew up with them and was inspired by them. I did so I don't mind them and I like some of the colorful art styles, but I know some here hate them.

pixel art begat pixel art, early 3d begat early 3d, AAA/CoD era begats ... well future indie devs might not have the budget for AAA graphics, but maybe technology will make it easy enough to create them even on low budgets. :p
I still play Heretic with oblige map generator + obaddon. I prefer it to Doom for some reason. :)
I play Quake once in a while. I used to play Wolfenstein 3d for hours. But I can't stand it for long today.

Early 3D, not barely 3D! ;-P
I was going to make a thread about his a while ago but specifically for the PS1 style graphics as their qualities represent that era better and PCs were still fairly expensive.

Whether it was the bitty sized texture effect or the warping polygons and a few other features that gave it a special look that doesn't look quite right on modern emulators.

https://www.gog.com/game/devil_daggers is game that has that look and one of the Ys games. Are there any more on GoG?
