Especially of old titles. In many cases I can find only yeah of game release on Moby Games, Wikipedia or even official game site. But on GOG (and Steam) we've got full date. In many cases it differs from other sources and sometimes that dates are very suspicious (I don't think that so many titles were release on January 2 :)) I'm making gogmix of adventure games chronology and precise dates would better shown genre evolution.

well... I'm guessing the whole 'release date' thing wasn't so big of a deal back in - say - the nineties. I was just browsing an old magazine called Computer Gaming World Issue 90 from the early 90's... there were many ads for games, but I didn't see any exact release date. There was an ad for Star Trek VI for example, and it simply said, "COMING CHRISTMAS 1991"... games were either available or 'coming' :)

But maybe you can get them from some other source.

Well when a mummy release date and a daddy release date really love each other they have a special cuddle...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I can only guess that since GoG and Steam are dealing with the original developers / publishers or at least the current rights holders that they may be given information not as readily available anywhere else (I would presume it would be recorded somewhere what day a game was originally released on).

Failing that, I imagine they just make something up...

Be aware that in the case of packs (example) some times it's the release date of the earliest game, other times the release date of the oldest one, and other times the date of the collection.
I've also notice than sometimes when there's only the month and year of the release date (in the game credits, or the release information in mobygames or the wikipedia, GOG assumes the first day of the month as the release date for its gamecard.
Yeah, I also think that in the early days no one care much about release date but games had to be manufactured and shiped to stores and someone should take a note damnit! :) It's funny that I can find premiere date for a silent movie from 1920 and the industry that is alive for about 30 years don't care about its legacy.

I was trying to use CGW but as -->superstande said even there I found nothing.

And yes I think some of GOG/STEAM dates are made up and no secret knowledge is involved.

It's really not a big dill BUT when one game premiere in January and other in December you can clearly see who copycat who :)

Yup. I think that may be the case.

...snip
Well, apparently dates help the digestive tract and relieve constipation, so all dates could be considered release dates?
