I'm hoping this thread will yield some old ones that I recall playing at friends/family's houses, but that I don't know enough of to search for, especially since there are tons of nes games. Remember those 199-in-1 cartridges?

Here's mine:

Super Mario Bros.
Because obviously... (sadly I never got to play the one where he could fly with a tail or something)

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero gameplay
6 joes, 6 missions (with each joe acting as squad leader on one mission) and, I think, 16 bosses (that I can remember). The levels are big, diverse and interesting, and the joes brilliantly compliment each other: Duke is an all rounder, Snake Eyes jumps the highest and uses no ammo, Capt. Grid-Iron has a devastating punch, Blizzard shoots through walls, Rock 'n Roll has a murderous machine gun, and General Hawk can fly. And if that's not enough, you gradually increase your joes stats throughout the campaign, until you're ready for the final showdown. A lot of bang for your buck with this one! It's not overly hard either, except for the final mission and some of the huge levels in which it is real easy to lose your way.

Ducktales 2 - gameplay
Dang this game rules! The original might be even better, but I haven't played it yet (I want to get a usb nes controller first). Apart from the solid platforming mechanics I love how deftly the game hides secrets, and how the game has areas that are inaccessible until you learn the appropriate move, like crushing bricks from above for example. The egypt level in particular is awesome, with its habit of teasing you by showing you an out of reach area, that can only be reached via some other hidden route.

TMNT 3 - gameplay
Being a turtles fan since forever, I've always loved the tmnt nes games, and no3 is the one that I owned. I owned the first one as well, but on pc, and it's one of those games we try not to talk about (*cough* dam level *cough* *cough*)
It's great fun, but ridiculously hard. You simply bleed turtle lives in this one. I think beating this game might be my proudest gaming achievement ever, even though I had a friend that helped me out with a 2nd ill-fated turtle. He finally lost his final life somewhere during a rooftop+elevator level, but I managed to soldier on and beat Shredder, with my final life and almost no health remaining. I don't even want to think about what would've happened had I lost at that point. In the very least the TV would've ceased to be...

Elevator Action - gameplay
Can't really think of anything else I played that's in the above games' league, but I do remember this one with great fondness. I remember I felt like it ought to be easy, but I rarely, if ever, managed to reach the bottom of the building :P
NES and not SNES right?

The Legend of Zelda
Metroid
Duckhunt (that gun was so awesome!)

I LOVE Shatterhand. It was one of those early-90's rental discoveries. It can be difficult because your primary mode of attack is fisticuffs (limited range), but the gameplay itself is so tight for an NES game, it just works.

The Legend of Zelda - my first love.
Super Mario Brothers - Still can't beat it!
Friday the 13th - first game to make me jump
Metroid - my first "WTF!" moment (during the great gender reveal at the end)
Duck Hunt - I am unstoppable!!!

Some runners up:
- TMNT - so very hard, but my favorite characters when I was a kid
- Zelda II - it was really, really hard and I never beat it, but it had great music and it was fun
- Mike Tyson's Punch-Out - I couldn't beat Tyson. My reflexes just weren't fast enough.
- Little League Baseball - to date, the best baseball game I've ever played
- Contra - I know we beat it MP, but I don't know if we used cheats
- Super Mario 2 and 3 - I could actually beat those ones.3 was very long, difficult and amazing. But SMB1 gets my favorite award b/c it was first. :)

That was Super Mario Bros 3. The Leaf gave you the racoon tail which allowed a limited flight, the Tanooki suit gave a full racoon suit (limited flight + able to turn into a statute), and the overpowered P-Wing (unlimited flight!).

You would deny Raphael his purpose in that game?! He made for a great damage sink to tank through the big seaweed part.

-----

Hard to pick a top 5. I suppose:
Contra
Ninja Gaiden
Mega Man 2/3
Final Fantasy
Zelda II: Adventure of Link
I never owned an NES so I can only really attest to the games I bought that were slightly enhanced or were on emulators (Virtual Console, Animal Crossing, etc.). But:
Contra
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Fire Emblem Gaiden

One of them is a Famicom game, so if that doesn't count:
Contra
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Wrecking Crew

As long as we're talking NES games and such, has anyone ever owned a RetroN 5?

Shatterhand was made by Natsume, who are mostly known nowadays for making Harvest Moon over and over, but when they started they were sort of like what Treasure was during the 16-bit era - a studio made up of Konami and Capcom veterans who were hungry to make cool action games. They made a few really good ones - http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/natsume/natsume.htm

It's tough to narrow it down to just 5 but...

Contra
Super Mario 3
Metroid
Castlevania 3
River City Ransom
Aside from emulators, have only played Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros on a real NES.

The majority of my list is very obvious (see avatar)

- Ninja Gaiden
- Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos
- Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom
- Festers Quest (bad game but my mom and dad love this game for some reason, so it deserves a spot.)
- Super Mario Bros (only game I've played on a real NES)

Call me a sissy but I've got to have those save states handy! :D
